Which Spock is best for Commander?
Mr. Spock, Science Officer. For four mana, two of it blue, every card you would draw becomes two while he is on the battlefield, starting with your next draw step. Commander Spock is the one to take if you want a precon, since he leads Landing Party and casts spells off the top of your library for free.

Four Spocks can lead a deck. Two are from the main Star Trek set, Commander Spock leads the Landing Party deck, and Logical Choice comes in the blue Welcome Deck. A fifth card has his name printed on it but is not him, as the note under the table explains. In order, the ones I’d take as a commander:
- Mr. Spock, Science Officer, because doubling every draw is the strongest thing any of the four does, and he does it from his first turn on the battlefield.
- Commander Spock, the Landing Party face, who turns each entry and attack into a free spell, a free land or a card.
- Spock, Logical Choice, a five-mana creature that taps to draw one card a turn. He is at his best in Mr. Spock’s 99, where that card is two.
- Spock, Always Your Friend, a two-mana creature whose only ability happens once, when he enters.
Every Spock needs blue, and two need nothing else
| Spock | Cost | Printed in | Build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mr. Spock, Science Officer | Star Trek, mythic rare | None yet | |
| Commander Spock Leads the Landing Party precon | Star Trek Commander, mythic rare | Our build | |
| Spock, Logical Choice In the blue Welcome Deck | Star Trek Commander, mythic rare | None yet | |
| Spock, Always Your Friend | Star Trek, uncommon | None yet |
Card details as of 27 October 2026. None of the four is legal in Commander until 13 November 2026, the day they release. Until then this ranking reads the cards as printed, with no games behind it.
Left out on purpose: Spock, Mirror Malefactor is the Stardates printing of Prosper, Tome-Bound. Only the name printed on it is Spock’s. The rules read it as Prosper, so a deck it leads is a Prosper deck.
Mr. Spock and Logical Choice are mono-blue, so either fits the 99 of any deck with blue in it. Commander Spock adds green and white and Always Your Friend adds red, which keeps those two out of each other’s decks unless the commander has four colours.
Each Spock at the head of a deck
Mr. Spock, Science Officer doubles every card you draw
Mr. Spock has one line of rules text: if you would draw a card, you draw two instead. It replaces every draw you make, the one in your draw step, a cantrip, or a draw from any other card’s ability. He costs four, two of it blue, and from the turn after he lands your hand grows twice as fast.
The price is attention. A 2/4 that doubles one player’s cards is the first thing the rest of the table points removal at, and each recast from the command zone costs two more. Blue’s counterspells and bounce are how a deck under him keeps him around long enough to win off the extra cards. Watch the library too, because a deck that draws heavily gets through its library twice as quickly.
Commander Spock turns the top of the library into free spells
Commander Spock leads the Landing Party precon in green, white and blue. Each time he enters or attacks you reveal your top card. A spell can be cast without paying for it if its mana value is no more than the count of lands you control with different names, a land can go onto the battlefield tapped, and if the card is still on top after that, you draw it.
So the worst a trigger does is draw you a card, and with a varied mana base the best is a free spell. Basics work against him, since ten Forests count as a single name. That makes him a commander for a deck built on nonbasic lands, which is where our build for him begins. He is second because three colours and a purpose-built mana base ask far more of a deck than Mr. Spock’s blue does.
Spock, Logical Choice draws a card a turn, and two beside Mr. Spock
Logical Choice is a five-mana 3/5 with vigilance and one ability: tap him to draw a card. Vigilance lets him attack and still tap for the card after combat, as long as he has been under your control since your turn began.
As a commander that is a lot of mana for one extra card a turn, an effect cheaper cards already give. He does more in Mr. Spock’s 99, where each tap draws two. His set is Star Trek Commander, yet the box he comes in is the blue Welcome Deck, a beginner’s 40-card deck.
Spock, Always Your Friend does his work once
Always Your Friend costs two in blue and red. When he enters you look at your top four cards, may take a noncreature, nonland card from among them into your hand, and put the rest on the bottom. That is all he does, so as a commander he pays off only when you cast him, and the tax grows with every recast.
In the 99 of a blue and red spells deck he is a cheap body that replaces himself, which is where he belongs. His red is the problem: none of the other Spocks can play him.
Mr. Spock belongs in the other blue Spocks’ decks
The legend rule never stops two of these, because their names all differ, so colour alone decides which can share a deck. Mr. Spock is the one worth adding to the others. In a Commander Spock deck he turns the draw at the end of each trigger into two cards, and in a Spock, Logical Choice deck every tap does the same. Logical Choice in turn fits both Mr. Spock’s 99 and Commander Spock’s. Always Your Friend is the odd one out, being the only red Spock.
FAQ
Which Spock card is the strongest commander?
Mr. Spock, Science Officer. He costs four, two of it blue, and while he is on the battlefield every card you would draw becomes two. Commander Spock does more per trigger, but he needs green, white and blue and a mana base built around him.
Is Spock, Mirror Malefactor a new Spock card or a reprint?
A reprint. Stardates prints Prosper, Tome-Bound under that name, and only a card’s Oracle name has any rules meaning. Deck builders, the legend rule and every card that names another all treat it as Prosper, so a deck it leads is a black and red Prosper deck, built around playing cards from exile. That is why the ranking leaves it out.
Which Star Trek Commander deck does Spock lead?
Landing Party, in green, white and blue, led by Commander Spock. Spock, Logical Choice belongs to the Star Trek Commander set and to the blue Welcome Deck, which is where you buy him. Mr. Spock, Science Officer and Spock, Always Your Friend come from the main Star Trek set.
Does Mr. Spock, Science Officer double the card Commander Spock draws?
Yes. Mr. Spock replaces every draw you make, whatever causes it, so when Commander Spock’s trigger ends with the top card still in place, you draw two cards instead of one. Spock, Logical Choice’s tap ability gets the same treatment.
Can Spock, Logical Choice attack and then draw a card the same turn?
Yes. Vigilance means attacking doesn’t tap him, so after combat he is still untapped and can be tapped for his ability. The one limit is summoning sickness: he has to have been under your control since the start of your turn to use the ability at all.
How many different Spock cards exist?
Four that can lead a deck as of 27 October 2026, split evenly between Star Trek and Star Trek Commander, with 13 November 2026 as the release date for both. A fifth card, Spock, Mirror Malefactor, is Prosper, Tome-Bound under a Star Trek name, and the answer above covers why it is not counted.
