Sworn To Darkness precon upgrade guide

Ten cards in this box make tokens, Ob Nixilis among them, and one card in it exiles every token you own and strips the loyalty off him, so the upgrade starts there.

Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath is a five-mana planeswalker that starts on 3 loyalty. His +2 drains each opponent for 1. His -2 makes a 5/5 flying Demon token and costs you 2 life, which leaves him on 1 if you use it straight away. Nine other cards in the 99 make tokens as well: Skirsdag High Priest, Flesh Carver, Ghoulcaller Gisa, Grave Titan, Overseer of the Damned, Liliana's Reaver, Promise of Power, Spoils of Blood and the Germ that comes with Lashwrithe. Aether Snap removes all counters from all permanents and exiles all tokens. It takes out every one of those tokens, and with the counters it takes the loyalty that keeps the commander on the table.

The rest of the box has a different kind of problem. Five of its removal spells say "nonblack" (Nekrataal, Shriekmaw, Annihilate, Malicious Affliction and Dregs of Sorrow), so none of them can hit a black creature. Thirty-two of its 40 lands are Swamps and five cards care how many there are, yet the land built to count them isn't in the box. Black has 42 sources, the average mana value is 3.85, and 23 of the 59 non-commander spells cost five or more. Without a single Game Changer in the box, it sits at Bracket 1.

What are the best Sworn To Darkness upgrades?

Prices are October 2026 market prices at the cheapest released printing, which is a promo or a Commander-set reprint for some of them. The eight adds come to $34.21 together, and $20.74 of that is one land.

  1. Cabal Coffers ($20.74). Pay {2} and tap it to add {B} for each Swamp you control. With five Swamps out it turns two mana into five, and this deck runs 32.
  2. Dread Presence ($3.77). Every time a Swamp enters under your control, draw a card and lose 1 life, or deal 2 damage to any target and gain 2. Argued in the mana section.
  3. Infernal Grasp ($0.28). Destroy target creature at instant speed for two mana and 2 life, and it hits black creatures too.
  4. Massacre Wurm ($2.69). Opposing creatures get -2/-2 when it enters, and each one that dies costs its controller 2 life.
  5. Phyrexian Arena ($2.54). A card every upkeep for 1 life, from a three-mana enchantment.
  6. Blood Artist ($2.59). Whenever any creature dies, target player loses 1 life and you gain 1.
  7. Zulaport Cutthroat ($1.26). The same drain, but only when your own creatures die.
  8. Arcane Signet ($0.34). A two-mana rock that makes {B} and enters untapped.

Where the deck lands after eight swaps

Average mana value goes from 3.85 to 3.73, and the cards at five or more drop from 23 to 20. Two-mana cards go from 13 to 16. Lands go from 40 to 39, 32 of them Swamps, and the always-tapped count stays at six. Ramp rises from 8 to 9, creatures from 28 to 29 (7 are Demons before Ob Nixilis starts making more), and the bracket floor stays at 1. At the cheapest printings the list moves from $101.94 to $126.48.

The card that exiles your own board, and the two bodies behind it

Aether Snap has a use, which is clearing a table of tokens and counters, and this deck is the table. A planeswalker with no loyalty counters goes to the graveyard, so Ob Nixilis goes with the Demons. The one job it could do for you, shutting off an opposing planeswalker, is already done by Vampire Hexmage for two mana: sacrifice it to remove all counters from target permanent. Out it goes.

Raving Dead is a 2/6 deathtouch for five that has to attack a random opponent every combat and halves that player's life when it connects. It has no evasion, and the deck already has nine fliers. A body that must attack is also one you can't always keep home to protect Ob Nixilis. Dread Presence costs a mana less and gives the deck something to do with its land drops.

Morkrut Banshee is a 4/4 for five whose -4/-4 happens only if a creature died earlier that turn. Without that it's a 4/4 for five with nothing else on it. The deck has plenty of ways to make a creature die, but they cost mana too, and Blood Artist pays for those deaths where the Banshee only waits for one.

Thirty-two Swamps, and the land that reads them

Five cards in the box already care about Swamps: Crypt Ghast adds an extra {B} each time you tap one, Magus of the Coffers makes {B} per Swamp for {2} and a tap, Mutilate gives every creature -1/-1 per Swamp, Tendrils of Corruption deals your Swamp count in damage to a creature and gains you that much life, and Lashwrithe gets +1/+1 for each. Cabal Coffers is the sixth, and it's the Magus's ability on a land, which is harder to kill than a creature. It costs $20.74, which is more than the other seven adds together, and I'd still put it first. Ghost Quarter goes out for it.

Ghost Quarter and Arcane Lighthouse are the two plain colourless lands the box runs beside Myriad Landscape, and both tap for {C} only in a deck whose mana is almost all {B}. Ghost Quarter destroys a land. Lighthouse strips hexproof, which only matters when an opponent has a hexproof creature. Neither makes {B}. Black goes from 42 sources to 44 once Cabal Coffers and Arcane Signet are in, and on the play, the chance of two black sources by turn three goes from 95.5% to 96.5%.

Dread Presence is the other half of the argument. It triggers on Swamps entering, and 32 of the 39 lands are Swamps (82%). Burnished Hart can fetch up to two basic lands, Myriad Landscape up to two basics that share a type, and if both are Swamps the Presence triggers twice. Draw a card and lose 1 life when you need cards, or deal 2 damage to a creature or player and gain 2 when you need to stay alive while Ob Nixilis pays 2 per Demon.

Swiftfoot Boots leaves for Arcane Signet. The Boots give one creature hexproof and haste for {1} to equip, and protecting a single creature matters less in a deck that makes tokens in bulk. The Signet is a rock, which takes ramp from 8 to 9.

The six tapped lands that stay all do something. Barren Moor and Polluted Mire cycle late, Bojuka Bog exiles a graveyard, Crypt of Agadeem adds {B} per black creature card in your graveyard when you pay {2}, Everglades gives {C}{B} from one land for the price of a bounced Swamp, and Myriad Landscape ramps. None of them is a Swamp, so none counts for Mutilate or Cabal Coffers, and I'm keeping them anyway.

Five removal spells can't see a black creature

Two of those five, Nekrataal and Shriekmaw, also can't touch an artifact creature. What does reach a black one is Tragic Slip, Tendrils of Corruption, Profane Command (its -X/-X mode), Reaper from the Abyss (any non-Demon, at end of turn after a death) and the enter trigger on Overseer of the Damned, plus Mutilate and Pestilence Demon if you're willing to hit your own board. A black commander across the table meets five targeted answers and one of them costs seven.

Infernal Grasp destroys any creature for two mana at instant speed, black, artifact or neither, and costs 2 life. That life matters for Ob Nixilis, who spends 2 per Demon, so Go for the Throat ($0.31) is the alternative with no life payment. The Throat can't target an artifact creature, which is why the Grasp got the slot. At a table with artifact creatures it's the one that always works.

A deck that kills its own board should be paid for it

Four wipes in the box (Mutilate, Black Sun's Zenith, Necromantic Selection and Pestilence Demon) and creature-sacrifice effects on cards like Disciple of Bolas, Ghoulcaller Gisa, Flesh Carver and Victimize mean a lot of this deck's creatures die on purpose. Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat turn each one into a point of drain, and each is a two-mana creature, in a curve that has 13 two-mana cards in the box and 16 after the swaps. Blood Artist counts every creature, which includes the ones a sweeper takes from your opponents. Zulaport counts only yours. With Disciple of Bolas sacrificing a Demon token, that's a 5/5 flier becoming five cards and five life, plus a point of drain from each Artist or Cutthroat on the table.

Massacre Wurm is the six-drop I wanted over the Gargantua. Its -2/-2 sweeps small creatures on their side only, and each creature that dies, from that or anything after, costs its controller 2 life. It's a one-sided sweeper and a drain engine in one card, where the six-drop it replaces is a 4/4 that draws two.

Phyrexian Gargantua draws two cards for six mana and leaves a 4/4, and I'd rather have the cards sooner, so Phyrexian Arena takes that job at three mana. It draws one a turn and costs 1 life each, and the drain from Ob Nixilis's +2 pays it back. Skeletal Scrying goes for a different reason. Its cost exiles cards from your graveyard, and five cards here return a creature from it (Victimize, Dread Return, Wake the Dead, Profane Command and Infernal Offering) alongside Crypt of Agadeem. A draw spell that eats the graveyard works against the cards it sits beside.

Why Abyssal Persecutor, Lashwrithe and the big six-drops stay

Abyssal Persecutor says you can't win and your opponents can't lose, which in a drain deck looks like a cut. It's a 6/6 flying trampler for four, and seven cards can sacrifice it: Disciple of Bolas, Ghoulcaller Gisa, Flesh Carver, Infernal Offering, Victimize, Xathrid Demon's upkeep and Dread Return's flashback. When it leaves the battlefield, any opponent at 0 or less loses at once. I'd just make sure one of those is in hand before the Persecutor goes down.

Lashwrithe is a single-creature attachment in a deck with plenty of creatures, and it still stays. It brings its own Germ, it gets +1/+1 per Swamp, and with six Swamps out it's a 6/6 for four mana. Grave Titan is a 6/6 deathtouch for six mana that makes two 2/2 Zombies when it enters and again each time it attacks. It costs $0.31. Magus of the Coffers costs five and does nothing on its own turn, and it stays because with six Swamps out it makes {B}{B}{B}{B}{B}{B} for {2}. Pontiff of Blight gives every other creature extort, and with Cabal Coffers making mana the deck can pay for the triggers.

Three cards I priced and passed on

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse ($82.02 at its cheapest printing) is a 4/5 deathtouch that gains you 2 life when you draw and costs each opponent 2 when they draw. Bloodgift Demon can make an opponent draw each upkeep, and Phyrexian Arena draws for you. It's the best card I'm not recommending, and the price is more than twice the whole add list. A new printing is listed in the Stardates masterpiece set on 13 November 2026, which may move the price. It isn't a Game Changer.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth ($53.73) makes every land a Swamp. Every Swamp payoff in this list would count every land, and Dread Presence would trigger on each land drop. It costs about one and a half times the whole add list. It isn't a Game Changer either, and if you're spending more than the list asks, I'd buy it before Sheoldred.

Damnation ($17.45) is the cleaner sweeper. The deck already has Mutilate, Black Sun's Zenith, Necromantic Selection and Pestilence Demon, and Massacre Wurm joins them as a fifth way to clear creatures, so another sweeper that kills your own board would be one too many.

The upgraded decklist

All eight swaps are made in this list, and hovering a name shows the card. Prices on this page are the cheapest released printing, so the deck builder pins the printing each add was priced at.

FAQ

Does Aether Snap really take Ob Nixilis off the table?

Yes. It removes all counters from all permanents, loyalty counters included, so a planeswalker drops to 0 loyalty and goes to the graveyard, and as your commander it can return to the command zone. It also exiles every token you control, the Demons included, which is why it's the first cut.

Which removal in the box can't kill a black creature?

Five cards say nonblack: Nekrataal, Shriekmaw, Annihilate, Malicious Affliction and Dregs of Sorrow. Nekrataal and Shriekmaw also skip artifact creatures. Infernal Grasp destroys any creature, so the upgrade adds a two-mana answer with no condition.

Does Ob Nixilis survive making a Demon?

Once. He starts on 3 loyalty, so a -2 leaves him on 1 with a 5/5 flier beside him. While you control him on the battlefield, Demon of Wailing Agonies gets +2/+2 and makes a player sacrifice a creature when it deals combat damage to them, which makes it a 6/6. He needs a +2 before the next Demon.

How many Swamps can Dread Presence trigger on in one turn?

As many as enter. Burnished Hart sacrifices for up to two basic lands and Myriad Landscape fetches up to two basics that share a type, so two Swamps from either give two triggers. Each trigger is a choice: draw a card and lose 1 life, or deal 2 damage to any target and gain 2 life.

Does Abyssal Persecutor stop a drain deck from winning?

While it's on the battlefield, yes. An opponent at 0 life or less stays in the game, and loses as soon as it leaves. Seven things sacrifice it: Disciple of Bolas, Ghoulcaller Gisa, Flesh Carver, Infernal Offering, Victimize, Xathrid Demon's upkeep and Dread Return's flashback.

What does upgrading Sworn To Darkness cost?

$34.21 for all eight adds at October 2026 market prices, using the cheapest released printing of each. Cabal Coffers is $20.74 of that and the other seven together are $13.47.

Why isn't Sheoldred in the Sworn To Darkness upgrade?

Its cheapest printing is $82.02, more than twice the whole add list, and it isn't a Game Changer. It's the best card I left out, since Phyrexian Arena and Bloodgift Demon would both feed it draws. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth ($53.73) is the next purchase after it.
