Subjective Reality precon upgrade guide

Five cards in this box have miracle, and the commander is the one planeswalker that can put the next draw on top of the library for free every turn.

Aminatou, the Fateshifter starts at three loyalty. Her +1 draws a card and then puts a card from your hand back on top of your library. Do that with a miracle card in hand and your next draw step hands it to you as the first card drawn that turn, so Terminus costs {W}, Devastation Tide costs {1}{U} and Entreat the Angels costs {X}{W}{W} in place of their full prices. That is the line the box was built around, and most of what holds it back is in the supporting cast. Seven cards in the 99 dig into the top of the library on their own schedule, a three-loyalty walker has no blockers of her own, and 21 of the 40 lands enter tapped.

The thirteen swaps add three more miracle cards, two one-mana exile spells, a bounce creature and an Arcane Signet, and six untapped lands in place of six that only enter tapped. They cost $17.92 at the cheapest released printing of each card, checked 15 October 2026.

What are the best Subjective Reality upgrades?

Cheapest printing in print today for every price here. The cut list below makes the room for them.

  1. Temporal Mastery ($4.45): an extra turn for {1}{U} when it's the first card you draw, and the extra turn has its own draw step, which is another chance to hit a miracle.
  2. Swords to Plowshares ($1.07): exile any creature for {W} at instant speed. The cheapest creature removal in the box that doesn't need a miracle costs three mana (Mortify and Crib Swap).
  3. Path to Exile ($0.84): the same job for the same mana. The creature's controller fetches a tapped basic land, a fair price for removing whatever was attacking Aminatou.
  4. Arcane Signet ($0.39): one mana of any colour in your commander's identity, with no {1} to activate. It makes black whenever you need it, and black is the colour the box is shortest on.
  5. Metamorphosis Fanatic ($5.92): a 4/4 lifelinker for {1}{B} on a miracle, and it returns a creature from your graveyard to the battlefield with a lifelink counter.
  6. Zephyrim ($0.50): a 3/3 flier with vigilance for {1}{W} on a miracle, and a flier is the kind of attacker the box's three Ninjas need to go unblocked.
  7. Reflector Mage ($0.34): bounces an opposing creature and keeps its owner from casting it again until your next turn, which is a full turn cycle without it attacking Aminatou.
  8. Six untapped two-colour lands ($4.41 together): Caves of Koilos, Underground River, Adarkar Wastes, Concealed Courtyard, Seachrome Coast and Darkslick Shores.

The stack only works if nothing else touches the top card

The box has five cards with miracle. Terminus and Banishing Stroke each cost {W} on a miracle, Devastation Tide costs {1}{U}, Entreat the Angels costs {X}{W}{W} and Entreat the Dead costs {X}{B}{B}. Terminus and Banishing Stroke cost six mana hard-cast and Devastation Tide five. The +1 is the only repeatable way the box has to put one of those on top deliberately, and Brainstorm, Dream Cache and Mortuary Mire back it up. After the swaps the count is eight.

The sequence is simple. On your turn, +1, and put the miracle card on top. On your next turn the draw step is the first draw, so you reveal it and pay the miracle cost. A card that reaches your hand any other way doesn't count, and neither does a second draw. So seven cards in the 99 are worth knowing about before you stack.

I kept all seven. The rule is only that the stack goes on top after they've resolved. Duskmantle Seer is the exception because its trigger fires every upkeep it's on the battlefield, so with it out the stacked card reaches your hand at upkeep undrawn. Treat Aminatou's +1 as a draw and a filter then, and cast the Seer after your miracle cards are spent.

What keeps a three-loyalty walker alive

Aminatou enters with three loyalty. After a +1 she's at four, and every creature that gets through takes that apart. The box answers a creature at three mana (Mortify and Crib Swap), four (Utter End) or a miracle Banishing Stroke, and Loyal Unicorn prevents combat damage to your creatures, not to her. The wipes are fine for her: Terminus puts only creatures on the bottom and Akroma's Vengeance destroys only artifacts, creatures and enchantments, so a planeswalker commander survives both. Devastation Tide is the one that includes her: it returns her to your hand, and from there she costs {W}{U}{B} with no commander tax, though her loyalty starts over at three.

Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile fill the gap at one mana each, a third of what the cheapest creature answer in the box costs, and Reflector Mage adds a three-mana bounce. Spot removal goes from 6 to 7 by the count.

She also turns on two cards in the box. Loyal Unicorn and Loyal Subordinate both check whether you control your commander at the start of combat, and a planeswalker on the battlefield is a commander you control. Loyal Subordinate makes each opponent lose 3 life, which at a four-player table is 9 life a turn from a three-mana 3/1 with menace.

Six spells and seven lands leave

The other six lands that go are covered in the mana section.

Six big spells I'm keeping

Six cards at five mana or more carry the usual case for cutting and I kept all of them.

Fifteen tapped lands left, and each does something

The box runs 40 lands with 16 basics, above the 35 to 38 range, and 21 of them always enter tapped. Six of those have nothing on them but the drawback: Orzhov Guildgate, Dimir Guildgate, Azorius Guildgate, Submerged Boneyard, Meandering River and Forsaken Sanctuary. The other fifteen do a job. Three bounce lands tap for two mana, five gain a life, three cycle, and Halimar Depths, New Benalia and Mortuary Mire all work the top of the library, which suits the plan. Arcane Sanctum makes all three colours.

The six replacements are three pain lands and three fast lands. Caves of Koilos, Underground River and Adarkar Wastes tap for colourless free or for either colour at 1 damage to you. Concealed Courtyard, Seachrome Coast and Darkslick Shores enter untapped as your first, second or third land and tapped from the fourth. Always-tapped lands fall from 21 to 15, with three conditional ones, and the land count goes from 40 to 39 because Isolated Watchtower leaves without a replacement.

Black stays short, and I want to be straight about that. The box has 19 black sources against the 24 a one-pip spell on turn two wants, and 54.8% to cast a double-black spell on turn three. Six spells ask for it: Army of the Damned, Entreat the Dead, Phyrexian Delver, Silent-Blade Oni, Skull Storm and Sower of Discord. The land swaps trade two-colour lands for two-colour lands, so the only new source is Arcane Signet. That takes black to 20 sources, 84.8% on turn two and 58% for the double. White ends at 25 and blue at 23.

The shocklands would fix black properly: Godless Shrine ($8.47) and Watery Grave ($10.01), with Hallowed Fountain ($7.41) for white and blue. I left all three out because Star Trek reprints them on 13 November 2026, which makes today's price the one most likely to fall, and the six lands above do most of the same work for a fraction of it. If black still stalls after the reprint, those are the next three purchases.

The finished list in numbers

Creatures go from 26 to 28, with 13 flying. Average mana value falls from 3.95 to 3.72, and cards at five mana or more drop from 21 to 19. Lands go from 40 to 39. Ramp rises from 8 to 9, spot removal from 6 to 7, and draw stays at 12.

Neither list has a Game Changer, so neither sets a bracket floor, and among the cards I skipped only Fierce Guardianship is one. Temporal Mastery is an extra turn, one of the advisory signals the bracket checker lists for the pregame conversation, and it's the only one I added. The box resolves to at least $54.79 at Scryfall market prices with three copies unpriced, and the upgraded hundred to at least $67.01. The thirteen adds are $17.92 of that.

The deck has no counterspell and I didn't add one. Mana Drain ($51.87) and Fierce Guardianship ($60.84, a Game Changer) are the premium ones. Counterspell is $2.26 but costs {U}{U}, and blue sits 13 sources short of double blue on turn three even after the swaps.

FAQ

How do I set up a miracle with Aminatou's +1?

Hold the miracle card in your hand and use the +1. She draws first and then you put a card from your hand on top, so the miracle card goes back on top after the draw. On your next turn the draw step draws it as the first card of the turn, you reveal it, and you pay the miracle cost: {W} for Terminus, {1}{U} for Temporal Mastery. Cast Lightform, Cloudform or Jeskai Infiltrator before you stack, because each of them takes the top card of your library.

Does Duskmantle Seer break the stack?

Yes while it's on the battlefield. Its upkeep trigger puts the top card of each library into its owner's hand, and a card put into your hand that way isn't drawn, so it can't be cast for its miracle cost. The card you draw in the draw step afterwards is still your first draw of the turn. I kept the Seer and would cast it after the miracle cards are spent.

Does Aminatou count as my commander for Loyal Subordinate and Loyal Unicorn?

Yes. Both lieutenants check whether you control your commander at the beginning of combat, and a planeswalker commander on the battlefield is a commander you control. With Aminatou out, Loyal Subordinate makes each opponent lose 3 life every turn and Loyal Unicorn prevents combat damage to your creatures that turn. Neither does anything while she's in your hand, the command zone or the graveyard.

What happens to Aminatou when Devastation Tide resolves?

She goes back to your hand with every other nonland permanent. You can cast her again for {W}{U}{B}, because commander tax applies only to casts from the command zone, and her loyalty starts over at three. The commander rules let you put her in the command zone instead, but then the next cast costs {2} more, so leave her in hand. Terminus and Akroma's Vengeance don't touch her at all.

How soon can Aminatou reach her ultimate, and what does the -6 do?

She enters with 3 loyalty. A +1 each turn takes her to 4, 5 and 6, so the -6 is available on the fourth turn she's on the battlefield. Forge of Heroes can put a loyalty counter on her the turn she enters, which saves a turn. The -6 has you choose left or right, and then each player gains control of all nonland permanents, other than Aminatou, controlled by the next player in that direction. The effect lasts indefinitely.

What does the upgrade cost, and are the shocklands worth waiting for?

The thirteen adds come to $17.92 at the cheapest released printing of each card, and Metamorphosis Fanatic ($5.92) and Temporal Mastery ($4.45) are most of it. I left out Godless Shrine ($8.47), Watery Grave ($10.01) and Hallowed Fountain ($7.41) because Star Trek reprints all three on 13 November 2026. Black is the colour that would use them, so they are the next purchases if black still stalls.

Does Temporal Mastery change the deck's bracket?

No Game Changer is added, so the floor stays where it was. Temporal Mastery is an extra turn, which the bracket checker lists as an advisory signal for the pregame conversation, and it's the only one in the upgraded list. It's exiled as it resolves, so it gives one extra turn and no more.
