Tramplesaurus Rex precon upgrade guide
Seventeen cards in this box check how much power your creatures have, and Ghalta clears every one of those checks on his own.
Ghalta costs {10}{G}{G}, and each point of power you control takes one off the {10}. Total power of 10 gets him down to {G}{G}, which is as cheap as he goes. The box is built for that sum. Five of its three-drops have a printed power of 4 or more: Pugnacious Hammerskull (6), Regal Imperiosaur, Rhonas the Indomitable and Steel Leaf Champion (5 each) and Scrapshooter (4), and Dungrove Elder is as big as your Forest count. Any two of the first four put Ghalta at {G}{G}. The eight mana creatures add nine power between all of them, because Birds of Paradise and Whisperer of the Wilds have 0 and the three one-mana Elves have 1 each.

100 cards, 38 lands (32 basic), 36 creatures, average mana value 3.38. Mana sources: 45 green.

What are the best Tramplesaurus Rex upgrades?
Ranked by how much each one gets out of a 12-power commander. Prices are October 2026 market prices for the default printing.
- Pathbreaker Ibex ($18.87). Whenever it attacks, your creatures get +X/+X and trample, where X is the greatest power among them. With Ghalta on the board that's +12/+12 for every attacker, every turn the Ibex swings.
- Heroic Intervention ($17.53). Two mana at instant speed for hexproof and indestructible on everything you control. The box has Tamiyo's Safekeeping and Collective Resistance, and both save one permanent. This saves the board.
- Return of the Wildspeaker ($2.62). An instant that draws cards equal to the greatest power among your non-Human creatures. Ghalta is an Elder Dinosaur, so that's twelve cards for five mana. The other mode gives non-Humans +3/+3.
- Primal Might ($0.10). With Ghalta out, {G} is enough for him to fight a creature you don't control. The {X} is for the turns he isn't.
- Kogla, the Titan Ape ($3.19). A 7/6 for six that fights a creature when it enters and destroys an artifact or enchantment each time it attacks.
- Territorial Allosaurus ($0.29). A 5/5 Dinosaur for four, or seven with kicker, when it fights another creature on the way in.
The other four adds are mana: Nature's Lore, Three Visits, Wayward Swordtooth and Castle Garenbrig. They're argued in the cut list beside the cards they replace.
Seventeen cards read power, and a 12/12 meets them all
Dinosaurs are ten of the 99, so this isn't a typal deck. What the box actually shares is a number. Here's every card in the 99 that checks a creature's power:
- Power 3 or more entering: Elemental Bond and Garruk's Packleader draw a card.
- Power 4 or more on the board: Colossal Majesty, Garruk's Uprising and Bonders' Enclave draw, Ilysian Caryatid and Whisperer of the Wilds make an extra mana, Rhonas the Indomitable can attack, Challenger Troll stops double blocks, Shamanic Revelation gains 4 life for each of them, and Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma takes {2} off the creature spell.
- Total power: Surrak, the Hunt Caller wants 8 for haste and Mosswort Bridge wants 10 to play its hidden card.
- Greatest power: Overwhelming Stampede, Rishkar's Expertise, Monstrous Onslaught and Thickest in the Thicket.
A 12/12 meets every one of those by himself, and that's the reason to build around Ghalta rather than just finish with him. Goreclaw even discounts Ghalta, on top of his own reduction. Rishkar's Expertise draws twelve and casts a spell of mana value five or less from your hand for free, Monstrous Onslaught deals twelve damage split however you like, and Overwhelming Stampede gives the team +12/+12. The one with a catch is Thickest in the Thicket, whose end step draw compares your biggest creature against everyone's, so a bigger creature across the table turns it off.
The upgrade leans on the same number. Pathbreaker Ibex and Return of the Wildspeaker both scale with greatest power, Primal Might and Territorial Allosaurus fight with it, and three of the box's own removal spells already use it: Bite Down, Ram Through and Monstrous Onslaught.
One hit for 21: the three slow cards that get Ghalta there
Twelve damage is short of 21, so a plain Ghalta needs two unblocked hits to kill someone with commander damage. Three cards in the box get him there in one, and none of them looks like much in a decklist. Two cost four or five mana and only ever help one creature, and the third is a five-mana enchantment that does nothing outside combat.
Tangleweave Armor gives the equipped creature +X/+X, where X is the greatest mana value among your commanders. Ghalta's is 12, and it counts from the command zone too. So the Armor comes down for four as a 12/12 Germ, and that Germ alone puts Ghalta at {G}{G}. Later, {4} moves it onto Ghalta for a 24/24 trampler (the Germ dies when the Armor leaves it). Thickest in the Thicket puts counters on a creature equal to its power, so Ghalta gets twelve and stays a 24/24. Unnatural Growth doubles your creatures' power and toughness at the start of every combat, including your opponents' combats, so Ghalta attacks as a 24/24 and blocks as one too.
Any one of the three turns Ghalta's first unblocked hit into 21 commander damage. Two cards in the box help that hit connect: Rogue's Passage makes him unblockable for {4}, and Challenger Troll means only one creature can block him.
Ten cuts, starting with a fog and a sweeper that only kills fliers
Arachnogenesis prevents combat damage from every non-Spider creature, including yours, and makes Spiders for each creature attacking you. It's a fog, and this deck is the one doing the attacking. Arasta of the Endless Web makes a 1/2 Spider when an opponent casts an instant or sorcery, which is defence too, on a 3/5 that adds three power. Heroic Intervention and Return of the Wildspeaker take their slots.
Whiptongue Hydra is one of the box's two ways to deal with a whole board, and it only destroys creatures with flying, which in this deck means your own Birds of Paradise. Against a table without fliers it's a 4/4 reach for six. The board answer that stays is Ezuri's Predation: eight mana for a 4/4 Beast per opposing creature, each fighting a different one. Kogla, the Titan Ape takes the Hydra's slot at the same mana value and answers a creature, an artifact or an enchantment. Verdant Sun's Avatar costs seven and gains life, and Pathbreaker Ibex replaces it a mana cheaper.
Curious Altisaur is a 2/5 for four that draws when a Dinosaur hits a player, and the deck has ten Dinosaurs including it, before you count Ghalta. Garruk's Packleader draws for creatures with 3 power or more, which Elemental Bond already does for three mana, and so do Garruk's Uprising and Beast Whisperer in their own ways. The box draws plenty without either of them. Primal Might and Territorial Allosaurus replace them, and with Wayward Swordtooth the Allosaurus keeps the Dinosaur count at ten, which matters for Pugnacious Hammerskull.
The last four are mana. Commander's Sphere is three mana for one {G} in a mono-green deck, and Clifftop Lookout is three mana for a 1/2 and a tapped land. Nature's Lore and Three Visits cost two and put a Forest onto the battlefield untapped, so the mana is usable the turn you cast them, and there are thirty-two Forests to find. Each one also grows Dungrove Elder. Wayward Swordtooth costs the same three as the Lookout and gives you an extra land drop every turn, plus 5 power toward Ghalta. It can't attack or block until you get the city's blessing by controlling ten permanents, and its power counts for Ghalta's discount either way.
Witch's Clinic and Scavenger Grounds are two colorless lands. The Clinic gives a commander lifelink for {2}. At $14.66 it's the second most valuable card in the box, which is a reason to sell it, not to play it. The Grounds exile every graveyard, which is a card for a specific opponent. Castle Garenbrig enters untapped once you have a Forest and can turn {2}{G}{G} into six green mana for creature spells. That takes the deck from 39 lands to 38, with three colorless lands left: Bonders' Enclave, War Room and Rogue's Passage.
Ghalta has no haste, and the box gives him three ways to get it
Ghalta usually comes down cheap, but he comes down without haste, and a turn of waiting is a turn for someone to find removal. Swiftfoot Boots is the obvious one, at {1} to equip. Surrak, the Hunt Caller gives a creature haste at the start of combat when your creatures have total power 8 or more, and Ghalta is 12 by himself, so he's eligible the turn he lands. Surrak and Goreclaw gives every other nontoken creature that enters a +1/+1 counter and haste, so Ghalta comes in as a 13/13 that can attack. It also gives your other creatures trample.
The two Surraks and Whisperer of the Wilds are the deck's only Humans. That's worth knowing before you choose a mode on Return of the Wildspeaker, because the +3/+3 skips those three.
The Great Henge costs as much as the whole box
Three cards I didn't put on the list. The Great Henge ($65.58) costs {7}{G}{G} less the greatest power you control, so with Ghalta out it's {G}{G} for an artifact that taps for {G}{G} and 2 life, and draws a card and adds a +1/+1 counter for every nontoken creature after it. It's the best card for this deck that isn't in it, and it costs about what the box's own singles are worth (at least $66.17). Buy it after everything above. Boseiju, Who Endures ($48.85) is a green land that doubles as artifact, enchantment or nonbasic land removal, and Kogla, the Titan Ape and Thrashing Brontodon cover the artifact and enchantment half of that job for a fraction of the price. Craterhoof Behemoth ($25.07) pumps by the number of creatures you control, and this deck counts power. Pathbreaker Ibex and Overwhelming Stampede already give +12/+12 with Ghalta out.
After the swaps the deck runs 38 lands at an average mana value of 3.38, down from 3.5 in the box. Cards that can deal with one opposing creature go from five (Beast Within, Bite Down, Ram Through, Kenrith's Transformation and Monstrous Onslaught) to eight. Nineteen creatures in the 99 still have 4 power or more, the same as the box. The bracket floor stays at 1, and none of the ten adds is a Game Changer.

FAQ
Does Tangleweave Armor work while Ghalta is still in the command zone?
Yes. It reads the greatest mana value among your commanders wherever they are, so the Germ it brings is a 12/12 the moment it enters, whether Ghalta is in the command zone, in your hand or on the battlefield. That Germ alone is enough power to bring Ghalta down to {G}{G}.
Does Pugnacious Hammerskull get stunned when Ghalta is on the battlefield?
No. Ghalta is an Elder Dinosaur, and the Hammerskull only gets a stun counter when it attacks while you control no other Dinosaur. Ghalta has to be on the battlefield to count, not in the command zone. The upgraded 99 has nine other Dinosaurs besides the Hammerskull.
What does upgrading Tramplesaurus Rex cost?
$65.46 for all ten adds at October 2026 market prices for default printings. Pathbreaker Ibex and Heroic Intervention are $36.40 of that, and the other eight come to $29.06. The box's own cards are worth at least $66.17.
When Ghalta fights with Ram Through, does the extra damage hit the player?
Yes, because Ghalta has trample. Ram Through has him deal 12 damage to the target creature, and anything past lethal goes to that creature's controller. Lethal is worked out from toughness and damage already marked, ignoring indestructible, so Ghalta against an indestructible 4/4 still sends 8 to the player.
How cheap can Ghalta, Primal Hunger get?
{G}{G}. His reduction only comes off the generic part of the cost, so total power past 10 doesn't help further. The cost is locked in before you pay it, so you can still sacrifice a creature for mana while paying without raising it, and creatures with 0 power, like Birds of Paradise, don't reduce it at all.
Is Craterhoof Behemoth better than Pathbreaker Ibex with Ghalta?
Not in this deck. Craterhoof gives +X/+X equal to the number of creatures you control, once, when it enters. The Ibex gives +X/+X equal to your greatest power every time it attacks, which is +12/+12 with Ghalta out. Craterhoof has haste and the Ibex doesn't, so the Ibex wants Swiftfoot Boots or one of the Surraks, but it costs $18.87 against Craterhoof's $25.07.
