Land's Wrath precon upgrade guide

Fifteen cards in this box besides the commander care when a land enters, and only two add a land drop.

Obuun puts a +1/+1 counter on a creature whenever a land enters under your control, and at the beginning of combat he turns a land into a trampling, hasty X/X Elemental, where X is his power. Fifteen other cards in the box have landfall: Admonition Angel, Trove Warden, Emeria Angel, Emeria Shepherd, Rampaging Baloths, Omnath, Geode Rager, Embodiment of Insight, Evolution Sage, Sporemound, Seer's Sundial, Retreat to Emeria, Khalni Heart Expedition, Retreat to Kazandu and Zendikar's Roil. Land ramp such as Kodama's Reach, Harrow and Nissa's Renewal puts lands onto the battlefield, and that triggers every one of them.

What the box can't do is get more from a single land or add land drops cheaply. Mina and Denn, Wildborn and Rites of Flourishing are the only cards that add a land drop, and Rites gives every opponent the extra land and the extra card too. Murasa Rootgrazer and Scaretiller can each put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield, but only by tapping, and Rootgrazer takes only basics. Nothing in the 100 makes a landfall trigger happen twice. Most of the swaps go there: one doubler, two more land drops and three more landfall cards, which takes the count from fifteen to eighteen. Two of the adds are priced from promo printings, because those are the cheapest copies released so far.

What are the best Land's Wrath upgrades?

Ten swaps for $34.67. I'd buy them in this order:

  1. Ancient Greenwarden ($12.46). Every landfall ability you control triggers twice, and you may play lands from your graveyard. The reasoning is in the doubling section.
  2. Dryad of the Ilysian Grove ($9.40). An extra land drop each turn, and every land you control becomes every basic land type, so each one taps for any color. That's the red fix, argued in the mana section.
  3. Lotus Cobra ($6.10). One mana of any color whenever a land enters, for two mana.
  4. Oracle of Mul Daya ($2.42). One more land drop, and you play lands off the top of the library.
  5. Tireless Tracker ($0.24) and Courser of Kruphix ($1.52). Tireless Tracker makes a Clue on every land, and Courser of Kruphix gains a life on every land and lets you play lands from the top of the library. The box has seven cards that draw, and Tracker makes it eight.
  6. Hardened Scales ($1.71). Whenever +1/+1 counters go on a creature you control, one more goes on. Obuun's own counter goes from one to two.
  7. Rootbound Crag ($0.26), Clifftop Retreat ($0.24) and Sunpetal Grove ($0.32). Three untapped duals that replace the three Guildgates. Also in the mana section.

Ten cards leave. The cuts are one wrath, six other spells and the three Guildgates.

Ancient Greenwarden turns one land into two triggers

Ancient Greenwarden's third ability applies to a triggered ability that fires because a land entered, and landfall is exactly that. The ruling says it doesn't copy the ability. It triggers twice, and any choices made as you put it on the stack, such as targets, are made for each one. In this list that covers eighteen landfall cards plus Obuun. A single land drop with Greenwarden out puts two counters on creatures of your choice, makes two Clues from Tireless Tracker, and gains two life from Courser of Kruphix.

The second half of the card matters as much as the first. Seven lands in the box sacrifice themselves: Blighted Woodland, Cryptic Caves, Myriad Landscape, Naya Panorama, Krosan Verge, Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse. Greenwarden lets you play any of them again from the graveyard, still one land per turn. Each sacrificed land you replay is another landfall, and that is the reason I'd pay twelve dollars for a six-mana 5/7 before any cheaper card here. It also makes The Mending of Dominaria's third chapter better, since every land that chapter returns triggers each landfall card twice.

Hardened Scales and Obuun share a line of text worth reading slowly. Obuun's counter is put on a creature, so Scales makes it two, and with Greenwarden both triggers are two each. That is four counters per land. Scales also adds one to the counters from Evolution Sage's proliferate, Elite Scaleguard's bolster, Fertilid entering and Abzan Falconer's outlast. It adds nothing to Waker of the Wilds or the awaken half of Planar Outburst, unless the land is already a creature, because Scales only works on counters put on a creature.

Three Gates become untapped duals, and red stays where it was

Always-tapped lands go from ten to seven. Boros Guildgate, Gruul Guildgate and Selesnya Guildgate leave, and Rootbound Crag (red or green), Clifftop Retreat (red or white) and Sunpetal Grove (green or white) come in. Each enters untapped if you control a land of either of its two types, and the box has 21 basics, so there is plenty to satisfy them. The land count stays at 37.

There is a cost, and Circuitous Route is where it lands. The three Gates were the only Gate cards in the deck, so the half of Route's text that says Gate now finds nothing and it fetches two basics. A Gate fetched by Route enters tapped anyway, which made it a free dual. I'm giving that up for three lands that are untapped on a normal land drop.

Red doesn't improve, and the page shouldn't pretend it does. The glance strip above says 18 red sources, and the extra one is Lotus Cobra, which the calculator counts as a source of every color. The lands are 17 red before and after the swaps, because two Gates that tapped for red are replaced by two duals that do. Eight spells print {R}, and the cheapest is a two-drop, with 79.2% to find red by turn two on the play. Three cards want {R}{R}: Geode Rager, Living Twister and Omnath, and 17 sources gives {R}{R} by turn three 48.1% of the time. Dryad of the Ilysian Grove is the fix, since it makes every land tap for red. The calculator can't see that. It is also a 2/4 that dies to ordinary removal, so I wouldn't call red solved.

Why Omnath, Sun Titan and the bounce lands stay

Omnath costs seven and needs {R}{R}{G}{G}, which is the most demanding colored cost in the box with only 17 red sources. It stays because each land makes a 5/5 and because Omnath deals 3 damage to any target whenever it or another Elemental you control dies. The list has seven Elemental creature cards, Zendikar's Roil makes 2/2 Elemental tokens, and Obuun and Embodiment of Insight turn lands into Elementals. If one more card goes, it's this one.

Sun Titan brings a land back from the graveyard when it enters and on every attack, since a land counts as a permanent card with mana value 0. Each of those can return a sacrificed fetch land and trigger every landfall card. Boros Garrison, Gruul Turf and Selesnya Sanctuary each enter tapped and return a land to your hand. That looks like a tempo loss on its own, and with Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove or Mina and Denn out, the replayed land is another trigger in the same turn.

One wrath, six other spells and three Gates leave

Hour of Revelation costs {3}{W}{W}{W} and destroys all nonland permanents. It gets {3} cheaper once ten or more are on the battlefield, counting every player's. Every one of the fifteen landfall cards beside Obuun is a nonland permanent, and so is Obuun. A deck that spends its whole game building a board of landfall payoffs shouldn't carry a card that deletes it, and the wipe count goes from two to one. Planar Outburst stays because it destroys nonland creatures only, so it leaves any land that is a creature.

Together Forever costs {W}{W} and puts counters on two creatures, then lets you pay {1} to bring one back to hand if it dies. {W}{W} by turn three needs 36 white sources and the box has 21. With it gone, the first white double-pip card in the list is a four-drop, so that check moves from turn three to turn four, and the odds go from 61.0% to 67.3% without counting Lotus Cobra. Tuskguard Captain is a slow outlast that gives trample to creatures with counters, and Abzan Falconer does the same outlast job for flying. Obuun's animated land already has trample. Flying gets damage past blockers, which trample doesn't.

Sandstone Oracle costs seven, is colorless, and draws only if the opponent you choose holds more cards than you. After the swaps the deck has three cards at seven mana or more, where the box had five. Crush Contraband exiles an artifact, an enchantment or both for {3}{W}, and four other cards still answer an artifact or enchantment: Banishing Light, Sylvan Reclamation, Acidic Slime and Admonition Angel. The spot removal count falls from five to four, and I accepted that. Kor Cartographer is a 2/2 for four that fetches a tapped Plains, and the box has seven. Elvish Rejuvenator costs one less and finds any land in the top five cards.

Treacherous Terrain is the cut I'm least sure about. At {6}{R}{G} it deals damage to each opponent equal to the number of lands that player controls, one-sided, and it has basic landcycling for {2} so it is never a dead card. It's also the most expensive card in the box, and a deck that wins by building a board shouldn't be waiting on eight mana to finish. Take it out of the cut list if you want a late-game reach spell and cut Omnath instead.

Five cards I looked up and left out

Avenger of Zendikar costs $0.52, so price isn't why it's out. It makes a 0/1 Plant for each land and grows every Plant on landfall, which is strong, and it costs seven mana in a list that now has three cards there. If you want a heavier top end, bring it in before anything else. Wooded Foothills ($18.06) fetches a Mountain or Forest, so it triggers landfall once for itself and once for the land it finds, but Rootbound Crag covers the same two colors for $0.26. Stomping Ground ($7.17), Sacred Foundry ($10.08) and Temple Garden ($6.76) enter untapped for 2 life and carry basic land types. All three are reprinted in Star Trek on 13 November 2026, so I'd wait. None of these is a Game Changer.

The deck after ten swaps, in numbers

Average mana value falls from 4.06 to 3.87, and cards costing four or more go from 36 to 33. Creatures go from 33 to 36, draw from 7 to 8, and cards that add a land drop from two to four. Landfall cards beside Obuun go from 15 to 18. Spot removal goes from five to four and wipes from two to one. With no Game Changers in either list, the bracket floor sits at 1 on both sides of the swaps.

FAQ

Does Ancient Greenwarden double Obuun's counters?

Yes, for the landfall half. Ancient Greenwarden makes Obuun's landfall ability trigger twice when a land enters, and each trigger picks its own target, so two counters can go on two different creatures. With Hardened Scales each trigger puts on two, which is four counters for one land drop. It does nothing for the beginning of combat ability, which isn't a landfall trigger.

Which land should Obuun turn into a creature?

An untapped one you don't need for mana, because a tapped land can't attack. The land becomes an X/X Elemental with trample and haste, where X is Obuun's power as the ability resolves, so counters from land drops earlier in the turn count. It's still a land, so if it dies it goes to your graveyard as a land card, where Ancient Greenwarden lets you replay it and The Mending of Dominaria returns it.

Does Lotus Cobra fix red mana in Land's Wrath?

Only on turns a land enters. Lotus Cobra adds one mana of any color when a land you control enters, and the ability uses the stack. The calculator counts it as a source of every color, which is why the upgraded list shows 18 red sources. The lands themselves are still 17, the same as the box.

Is Ancient Greenwarden most of the $34.67 budget?

Most of it, with Dryad of the Ilysian Grove. Ancient Greenwarden is $12.46 and Dryad is $9.40, which is $21.86 of the $34.67 total, and the other eight cards come to $12.81. Prices are from October 2026 at the cheapest released printing, and the Greenwarden and Lotus Cobra prices are for Zendikar Rising promo printings.

Does either version of Land's Wrath have a bracket floor above 1?

No. No Game Changer or mass land denial appears in the box or the upgraded list, and none of the ten additions is a Game Changer. Acidic Slime destroys one land, which isn't mass land denial.

Does Planar Outburst still make sense after Hour of Revelation leaves?

It's the wrath I kept. Planar Outburst destroys nonland creatures only, so a land that is a creature isn't destroyed, which includes the one Obuun animates if you cast it after combat. Cast for its awaken cost of eight mana, it also puts four +1/+1 counters on a land that becomes a creature. Hour of Revelation destroys every nonland permanent, which includes all of your landfall cards.
