Draconic Domination precon upgrade guide
Sixteen of the 37 lands in this box enter tapped, and 33 of its 62 spells cost five or more.
Twenty-nine of the box's 33 creatures are Dragons, the commander included, and The Ur-Dragon draws a card for each one that attacks before it puts a permanent from your hand onto the battlefield. The box has the Dragons for that. Twenty-six of the 28 others cost five or more and 18 cost six or more, which is why the discount matters. The commander takes {1} off every other Dragon spell from the command zone, Dragonlord's Servant takes another {1}, Dragonspeaker Shaman takes {2} and Herald's Horn takes one more. Utvara Hellkite, a {6}{R}{R} eight-drop, costs {2}{R}{R} with the first three out.
None of that discount touches coloured mana, and the box is five colours. Sixteen lands enter tapped: ten three-colour lands, Path of Ancestry and all five Vivid lands. On the play, the odds of having {B}{B} by turn four are 67.3%, the odds of having {R}{R} by turn three are 71.8%, and eight cards print {R}{R}. So the swaps start with the mana. Four Vivid lands leave for three untapped dual lands and Exotic Orchard. Eight spells leave for Arcane Signet, Chromatic Lantern, two removal spells, Shared Animosity and three Dragons that care when other Dragons arrive.

100 cards, 37 lands (18 basic), 35 creatures, average mana value 4.31. Mana sources: 22 white, 22 blue, 22 black, 24 red, 22 green.

What are the best Draconic Domination upgrades?
Ranked by how much each does for this deck. Prices are October 2026 market prices at the cheapest released printing, and all twelve swaps come to $24.68.
- Lathliss, Dragon Queen ($0.37). Whenever another nontoken Dragon you control enters, she makes a 5/5 flying Dragon token. Thirty other Dragons in the upgraded deck qualify, and The Ur-Dragon does too when you cast it from the command zone. With the Eminence discount she costs five.
- Chromatic Lantern ($0.45). It taps for any colour and gives every land you control the ability to tap for any colour. With it out, all 37 lands fix a five-colour deck, which is the problem the rest of this list can only nibble at.
- Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm ($4.57). Whenever another nontoken Dragon enters under your control, you get a token copy of it that isn't legendary. Seventeen of the other Dragons, the commander included, are legendary, so that clause matters, and Broodmate Dragon cast under her leaves four Dragons on the table. She has ward {2}.
- Shared Animosity ($4.14). Each attacking creature gets +1/+0 for every other attacker that shares a creature type with it. Five Dragons attacking means each one gets +4/+0, on top of what Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury gives.
- Goldspan Dragon ($11.05, a promo printing). A 4/4 flier with haste that makes a Treasure when it attacks or becomes the target of a spell, and Treasures you control tap for two mana. It costs four with the Eminence discount, and the haste means it can attack the turn it lands.
- Arcane Signet ($0.38). Two mana, and it taps for any colour in the commander's colour identity, which is all five here.
- Swords to Plowshares ($0.88) and Anguished Unmaking ($1.54). Two instants that exile. Swords takes one creature for {W}, and Anguished Unmaking takes any nonland permanent for {1}{W}{B} at a cost of 3 life.
- Adarkar Wastes ($0.32), Underground River ($0.47), Caves of Koilos ($0.34) and Exotic Orchard ($0.17). Four lands that enter untapped, argued in the mana section.
Sixteen tapped lands, and the four I'd take out
The tapped lands are ten three-colour lands (Arcane Sanctum, Crumbling Necropolis, Frontier Bivouac, Jungle Shrine, Mystic Monastery, Nomad Outpost, Opulent Palace, Sandsteppe Citadel, Savage Lands and Seaside Citadel), Path of Ancestry and five Vivid lands. A three-colour land is worth a tapped turn in a five-colour deck. The Vivid lands are the weakest of the sixteen. Each one enters tapped with two charge counters, taps for one colour, and can spend a counter to make any colour, twice.
Vivid Meadow, Vivid Creek, Vivid Marsh and Vivid Grove leave. Vivid Crag stays, because red is what the box leans on hardest: 25 of its 63 nonland cards, the commander included, print red. The three replacements are Adarkar Wastes (white or blue), Underground River (blue or black) and Caves of Koilos (white or black). They enter untapped, tap for colourless for free, and deal 1 damage to you when tapped for a colour. White, blue and black are the thin colours here, each on 21 sources against 23 for green and 25 for red. Exotic Orchard takes Vivid Grove's slot and makes any colour that a land an opponent controls could produce, which at a four-player table is usually all five.
I'd be overselling it to call this a source-count win. Counting every land and rock that makes a colour on demand, white, blue and black each rise from 21 to 22, green falls from 23 to 22 and red from 25 to 24, because a Vivid land counts for all five colours and the dual lands count for two. I'm not counting Goldspan Dragon's Treasures. What the lands buy is tempo: tapped lands fall from 16 to 12, and 25 of the 37 now enter untapped.
The real fixing is Chromatic Lantern. While it's out every land you own makes any colour, which is the one swap that closes the {B}{B} gap. It has to be drawn and survive first, and the odds table can't see it either way. Arcane Signet is the smaller, cheaper version of the same idea. Dreamstone Hedron leaves to make room, which takes the cards that fetch or make mana from nine to ten. It cost six, made only colourless mana, and isn't a Dragon, so no discount touched it. It can also be sacrificed for {3} to draw three cards, which is the part I'm giving up. Farseek can't fetch a Forest, but Cultivate, Kodama's Reach and the two basic-land artifacts can, and I didn't touch any of the four.
Three Dragons and the attack that uses them
The box makes Dragon tokens in several places. Broodmate Dragon makes a 4/4, Utvara Hellkite makes a 6/6 each time a Dragon attacks, and Wasitora, Nekoru Queen makes a 3/3 when its hit finds no creature to sacrifice. What it doesn't do is reward the Dragons you cast. Lathliss and Miirym both trigger on another nontoken Dragon entering, and with 30 others in the deck they fire on every one of them. Both cost six, so five with the Eminence discount, and both want to be out before the eight-drops. Tokens don't trigger either one, which the FAQ spells out.
Miirym copies the Dragon as printed, so what comes back is a second Broodmate Dragon or a second Scourge of Valkas. Scourge of Valkas deals X damage to any target when it or another Dragon enters, where X is the number of Dragons you control, so a Miirym copy gives three damage triggers from one cast: the original's, the copy's own and the original's again for the copy entering. The copy of a legendary Dragon isn't legendary, so a second Atarka, World Render or a second Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury can sit next to the first without the legend rule taking one.
Shared Animosity is the attack half. Six cards already trigger whenever a Dragon you control attacks: Utvara Hellkite, Atarka, Dromoka, Kolaghan, Ojutai and Silumgar. The Ur-Dragon and Kindred Discovery pay per attacker too. Shared Animosity gives each attacker +1/+0 for every other Dragon in the attack, so a wide attack is a larger one. Goldspan Dragon is the cheapest of the three to land, at four mana with the discount, and it brings haste.
Eight spells leave, and Taigam is the one with a case
Curse of Bounty, Curse of Verbosity and Curse of Opulence are three Auras that only pay when the player they enchant is attacked, and each opponent who attacks that player gets the same thing you do. Bounty untaps all your nonland permanents, Verbosity draws a card and Opulence makes a Gold token. Each triggers once however many creatures attack. Attack the enchanted player and you get a card, a token or an untap once a combat, and so does every opponent who attacks that player too. That's a small, shared payoff for a slot.
Rain of Thorns costs six, isn't a Dragon, and destroys an artifact, an enchantment and a land if you want all three. The three modes are real. It's the one cut that gives up something nothing else in the list replaces, which is land destruction, because Anguished Unmaking exiles a nonland permanent. With 33 spells already at five mana or more, I'd rather have the three-mana instant.
Fortunate Few asks you to choose a nonland permanent you don't control, and each other player does the same. Everything else that isn't a land is destroyed. Nothing of yours is spared unless an opponent picks it, so in a deck where 28 of the 99 other cards are Dragons it kills the Dragons. {W}{W} is also one of three white double costs in the box. Crux of Fate stays because it can destroy all non-Dragon creatures and leave yours.
Taigam, Ojutai Master makes your instants, sorceries and Dragons uncounterable and gives an instant or sorcery rebound if Taigam attacked this turn. The first half is the argument for it, and it's the same thing Cavern of Souls does for $47.51. The second half needs Taigam to attack, and he has no flying, so he has to get through three opponents to do it. He's also the only non-Dragon creature above three mana, and he's gold in white and blue, two of the three colours the box has the fewest sources for.
Dreamstone Hedron is in the mana section. Nihil Spellbomb exiles one player's graveyard. This deck uses graveyards: Bladewing the Risen, Boneyard Scourge, Teneb, the Harvester and Haven of the Spirit Dragon all bring things back, and Teneb can take a creature from any graveyard, so exiling one works against it. The {B} to draw when it leaves the battlefield doesn't change that.
Cards the deck keeps that look like the wrong type
Dragonlord's Servant and Dragonspeaker Shaman are a Goblin Shaman and a Human Barbarian Shaman, which is why both are off-type for a deck with 29 Dragons. They take {1} and {2} off every Dragon spell, and the Utvara Hellkite example in the opening is what that adds up to. Cut either and every Dragon in the box costs more. Orator of Ojutai is a two-mana flying defender that draws a card on entering if you control a Dragon or reveal one as you cast it, so it's a cheap draw that also blocks.
Palace Siege reads as a five-mana enchantment with no evasion, and it drains each opponent for 2 every upkeep while you gain 2, which is 6 across a three-opponent table before a Dragon has attacked. Choose Dragons when it enters. (The anchor word has nothing to do with the creature type.) Fractured Identity exiles a nonland permanent and every player except its controller, you included, creates a token copy of it. Lightning Greaves gives a Dragon haste and shroud for nothing to equip, so a Dragon cast this turn can attack and add to The Ur-Dragon's draw.
Name Dragon, three times
Herald's Horn, Kindred Discovery and Mirror of the Forebears each ask for a creature type when they enter, and the answer is Dragon on all three. After the swaps 32 of 35 creatures are Dragons, and the three that aren't are Orator of Ojutai, Dragonlord's Servant and Dragonspeaker Shaman. Herald's Horn takes {1} off Dragon creature spells and, at your upkeep, lets you take the top card of your library if it's a Dragon. Kindred Discovery draws when a Dragon enters or attacks, so five Dragons attacking draws five from it and five more from The Ur-Dragon.
Where the next $73 would go
Terror of the Peaks ($25.38 at its cheapest printing, a Secret Lair) is the one I'd buy next. Whenever another creature enters under your control it deals damage equal to that creature's power to any target, and spells your opponents cast that target it cost 3 extra life. It's a five-mana Dragon, four with the discount, and every Dragon entering is damage to aim. Cavern of Souls ($47.51) taps for any colour to cast a Dragon, and a Dragon cast with it can't be countered, which is Taigam's job done better. It costs about twice the whole twelve-swap list for one land, so it goes last. Neither is a Game Changer, and neither is reprinted in any set Scryfall lists as upcoming.
What changes once the twelve swaps are in
The deck stays at 37 lands and the average mana value barely moves, from 4.29 to 4.31, because a Dragon deck's curve is what it is. Cards costing five or more stay at 33. What moves is the mana and the Dragon count. Always-tapped lands fall from 16 to 12, mana-producing cards go from nine to ten, the Dragons go from 29 of 33 creatures to 32 of 35, and cards printing {R}{R} go from eight to ten, because Goldspan Dragon and Lathliss both print it. Red goes from 25 sources to 24 over the same swaps while two more cards print {R}{R}, which is the cost of this list I'd flag first, and Chromatic Lantern is the card that answers it. No add is a Game Changer, and Bracket 1 is the floor with or without the swaps.

FAQ
Does Dragonlord's Servant stack with The Ur-Dragon's Eminence?
Yes. Eminence and Dragonlord's Servant take {1} each off the generic part of a Dragon spell and Dragonspeaker Shaman takes {2}, so the three together take {4}. Utvara Hellkite costs {6}{R}{R}, and with all three out it costs {2}{R}{R}. Herald's Horn naming Dragon takes one more off Dragon creature spells. None of them can reduce coloured mana, which is why this deck's problem is colour and not generic mana.
Do Dragons from Broodmate Dragon or Utvara Hellkite trigger Lathliss and Miirym?
No. Both only trigger when another nontoken Dragon enters, and the 4/4 from Broodmate Dragon, the 6/6s from Utvara Hellkite and the 5/5s Lathliss makes are all tokens. A token copy that Miirym makes is a token as well, so it doesn't trigger Lathliss either. What does work is Miirym copying Broodmate Dragon itself: the copy enters and makes its own 4/4, and one cast finishes with four Dragons on the table.
Which creature type should Herald's Horn and Kindred Discovery name?
Dragon, on both, and on Mirror of the Forebears too. After the swaps 32 of the deck's 35 creatures are Dragons, so naming Dragon leaves out only Orator of Ojutai, Dragonlord's Servant and Dragonspeaker Shaman. With Kindred Discovery out, a five-Dragon attack draws five cards from it and five more from The Ur-Dragon.
Is Fortunate Few worth keeping in a deck full of Dragons?
I cut it. You have to choose a nonland permanent you don't control, so nothing of yours is spared unless an opponent picks it, and everything else that isn't a land is destroyed, your Dragons included. Crux of Fate is the sweeper this deck can use, because it can destroy all non-Dragon creatures and leave yours alone.
What does upgrading Draconic Domination cost?
$24.68 for all twelve swaps, at the cheapest released printing in October 2026. Goldspan Dragon is $11.05 of that, and its cheapest printing is a promo. Every other swap is under $5. Chromatic Lantern and Exotic Orchard are both reprinted in Mystery Booster Commander Edition on 9 November 2026, but at $0.45 and $0.17 there isn't far for them to fall.
Should I buy Cavern of Souls for a Dragon deck?
It's the best land the deck could own, and I left it out on price. Naming Dragon makes it tap for any colour to cast a Dragon creature spell, and that spell can't be countered. The cheapest printing is $47.51, about twice the whole twelve-swap list. Terror of the Peaks at $25.38 is the one I'd buy before it. Neither is a Game Changer.
