Mystic Intellect precon upgrade guide

22 of the 28 instants and sorceries in this box can be cast from a graveyard, which is exactly what Sevinne wants, so the upgrade leaves that part alone and goes after a banned card, the tapped lands and the red mana.

Sevinne, the Chronoclasm copies the first instant or sorcery you cast from your graveyard each turn, and the box is built around it. Flashback, jump-start, retrace and aftermath cover 22 of its 28 instants and sorceries (Dusk // Dawn, Refuse // Cooperate and Farm // Market are one card each). Four permanents pay you for the cast itself. Thalia's Geistcaller makes a 1/1 flying Spirit, Secrets of the Dead draws a card, Burning Vengeance deals 2 damage to any target, and River Kelpie draws a card whenever any player does it.

The trouble is around the engine. Dockside Extortionist is banned in Commander, so the stock deck contains a card you can't legally play. Twelve of its 40 lands always enter tapped. Four spells print {R}{R} (Backdraft Hellkite, Crackling Drake, Increasing Vengeance and Magmaquake), the cheapest of them is a two-drop, and the box has 21 red sources, which gives it a 61% chance of two by turn three on the play. It has five mana rocks to go with those lands.

What are the best Mystic Intellect upgrades?

Ordered by how much each card helps the graveyard plan, with the mana last. Prices are October 2026 market prices at the cheapest released printing, which can be a promo, and the eleven cards together come to $37.37.

  1. Lier, Disciple of the Drowned ($1.17). Five mana for a 3/4 that gives every instant and sorcery card in your graveyard flashback at its mana cost, on any turn, for as long as it stays out. In the box only Backdraft Hellkite does that, and only when it attacks. Under Lier all 28 instants and sorceries in the upgraded list can be cast from a graveyard on their normal timing, Storm Herd and Fact or Fiction included.
  2. Snapcaster Mage ($13.18). Two mana with flash, and its enter trigger gives one instant or sorcery card in your graveyard flashback until end of turn. It takes the two-mana slot Dockside Extortionist leaves. It's the most expensive card here, and a cheaper stand-in is below.
  3. Swords to Plowshares ($0.99) and Lightning Bolt ($0.74). One mana each at instant speed, and the only cards in the upgraded deck that answer a creature for a single mana. Once Lier or Snapcaster Mage has one in the graveyard, they're what Sevinne copies well. A copy picks new targets, so Swords to Plowshares exiles a second creature and Lightning Bolt deals 3 damage to a second target.
  4. Arcane Signet ($0.39), Talisman of Creativity ($0.49) and Talisman of Conviction ($0.34). Three two-mana rocks. Arcane Signet makes any of the deck's three colours. The Talismans make red with blue or red with white, and deal 1 damage to you for each coloured mana.
  5. Steam Vents ($9.60), Sacred Foundry ($10.04), Battlefield Forge ($0.22) and Shivan Reef ($0.21). Four untapped red duals, argued in the mana section.

One copy a turn, and the copy isn't cast

Sevinne has to be on the battlefield before the flashback. If an instant or sorcery was already cast from your graveyard earlier in the turn, before she arrived, her trigger can't fire at all that turn.

The copy goes onto the stack without being cast. Thalia's Geistcaller, Secrets of the Dead, Burning Vengeance and River Kelpie all watch for a cast, so none of them sees it. The same goes for any bonus that depends on how the original was cast. Increasing Devotion makes ten 1/1 Humans when it's cast from a graveyard and five otherwise, and Sevinne's copy of it was never cast from one, so a single flashback is 15 Humans for nine mana, not 20. Increasing Vengeance copies a spell twice from a graveyard, and Sevinne's copy of Increasing Vengeance copies it once.

One trigger a turn also decides how many flashback enablers are worth owning. The box has Backdraft Hellkite, plus Mystic Retrieval and Runic Repetition, which put cards back in your hand. Lier and Snapcaster Mage join Hellkite as three cards that hand out flashback. A fourth adds spells you can cast, never a second copy, which is why Sphinx of Forgotten Lore is left out below.

What leaves, starting with the card that can't legally be there

Dockside Extortionist makes a Treasure for each artifact and enchantment your opponents control when it enters. It's banned in Commander, so this is the one cut that isn't a judgement call.

Fervent Denial is the only counterspell in the box, five mana with a flashback of {5}{U}{U}. It's the card Lier switches off, because Lier says spells can't be countered and that includes yours. Keep the counterspell and the best enabler in the list fights itself.

Mass Diminish sets one player's creatures to a base 1/1 until your next turn, and it only reaches creatures already on the battlefield when it resolves. A creature cast afterwards is full size. Ghostly Prison already taxes each creature that attacks you, and Pramikon, Sky Rampart limits each player to attacking their nearest opponent in one direction, so a two-mana sorcery that covers one opponent at a time is the weakest of the three defences.

Scaretiller is a 1/4 for four whose trigger fires when it becomes tapped. The ways to tap it in this deck are attacking with it and Ral Zarek's +1. Dropping an extra land from your hand is real value, but not from a creature that has to attack into a table to earn it.

Bloodthirsty Blade is the closest call. It costs two, then {1} each time you move it onto an opponent's creature, which gives that creature +2/+0 and goads it. That's a fair political card and the first cut I'd reverse if your pod points everything at you. It goes because Ghostly Prison and Pramikon already cover that job, and none of the Blade's mana helps cast a spell from a graveyard.

The other six cuts are lands, and they're next.

Six tapped red duals out, four untapped ones and three rocks in

Boros Guildgate, Izzet Guildgate, Stone Quarry, Wind-Scarred Crag, Highland Lake and Swiftwater Cliffs all enter tapped and all make red with one other colour. That's half of the box's 12 tapped lands. Steam Vents and Sacred Foundry come in untapped when you pay 2 life and tapped when you don't. Battlefield Forge and Shivan Reef always enter untapped, tap for colourless for free, and deal 1 damage to you when they make a colour. The two shocklands are $9.60 and $10.04. Both appear in a Star Trek set that releases on 13 November 2026, so those two prices may move.

I didn't buy Hallowed Fountain ($7.41). It would lift white and blue by one source each, but red is short at one pip and at two, and the swaps spend the money there first. It's the next land I'd add.

Six tapped lands stay, five of them for a reason. Azorius Chancery, Boros Garrison and Izzet Boilerworks return a land to your hand and tap for two mana, Myriad Landscape sacrifices for two basics that share a land type, and Mystic Monastery taps for blue, red or white. Tranquil Cove is the one with the weakest case, a plain white-blue tapland that gains 1 life, and it's the first land I'd cut next.

Land count falls from 40 to 38 because the two Talismans take land slots. Arcane Signet, Talisman of Creativity and Talisman of Conviction take the mana rocks from five (Sol Ring, both Lockets, Commander's Sphere and Empowered Autogenerator) to eight.

Red goes from 21 sources to 22, and the odds of one red source by turn two on the play from 86.3% to 87.7%. Two red sources by turn three go from 61% to 63.9%, which is still the weakest number in the deck. Blue and white each go from 25 sources to 26, and two of either by turn four from 77.7% to 79.8%. Those counts treat the rocks as sources, and a rock costs two mana to cast first, so the real odds sit a little lower. The box's basics are 9 Plains, 8 Islands and 4 Mountains, so the cheapest red fix is a Plains for a Mountain. I haven't made it a swap, because it costs a white source and the deck's own {W}{W} and {U}{U} cards are short on those too.

Not every heavy card goes. Increasing Devotion costs five, and its flashback is the priciest fixed one in the box at nine mana, for 15 Humans as worked out above. Sun Titan brings a permanent card back from your graveyard when it enters and when it attacks, as long as its mana value is 3 or less, and the deck has Secrets of the Dead, Burning Vengeance, Thalia's Geistcaller and Ghostly Prison at three mana each. Elsha of the Infinite has prowess and lets you cast the top card of your library if it is a noncreature spell, as though it had flash. Refuse // Cooperate adds up to seven mana, but you cast one half at a time, Refuse for {3}{R} and Cooperate for {2}{U}. Cooperate can only be cast from a graveyard, so it triggers Sevinne whenever it's the first graveyard cast of the turn.

Two of the deck's wipes are damage wipes. Rolling Temblor hits each creature without flying for 2, and Magmaquake deals X to every planeswalker as well as each creature without flying. Sevinne prevents all damage dealt to her, and the fliers (Backdraft Hellkite, Pristine Angel, Pristine Skywise, Zetalpa and Crackling Drake) sit outside both. Ray of Distortion stays too. It's the deck's only answer to a problem artifact or enchantment, and its flashback is {4}{W}{W}.

Passed over, and where the deck lands

Sphinx of Forgotten Lore ($0.60) is a flash 3/3 flier that gives an instant or sorcery flashback when it attacks. It's a fourth enabler, which adds spells and not copies, and it's another {U}{U} four-drop in a deck short of blue. Past in Flames ($2.53) is the same story at four mana: it gives every instant and sorcery flashback for the turn, and only the first graveyard cast gets copied.

Slickshot Lockpicker ($0.25) is the budget answer to Snapcaster Mage. It gives one instant or sorcery flashback until end of turn too, for three mana and without flash, which means it can't be cast on an opponent's turn.

Mana Drain ($51.64) counters a spell and adds mana equal to its mana value at your next main phase. I left it out for the reason Fervent Denial goes: with Lier out nothing can be countered, so it does nothing when the engine is online. It also costs more than the entire upgrade. Cyclonic Rift ($29.45) is a Game Changer, and any one of them puts a deck in Bracket 3 at the least. Neither the box nor this list has one.

After the eleven swaps, average mana value falls from 3.71 to 3.59, with one-mana cards going from 4 to 6 and four-mana cards from 16 to 15. Lands go from 40 to 38, and the ones that always enter tapped from 12 to 6. The count of instants and sorceries stays at 28, but the ones that can be cast from a graveyard without help go from 22 to 20 (Fervent Denial and Mass Diminish out, Swords to Plowshares and Lightning Bolt in), and under Lier all 28 count. The swaps cost $37.37.

FAQ

Is Dockside Extortionist legal in the Mystic Intellect deck?

No. Dockside Extortionist is banned in Commander, even though it ships in this box. The guide cuts it and puts Snapcaster Mage in its place, which gives one instant or sorcery flashback for a turn.

How many spells does Sevinne copy each turn?

One. Sevinne copies only the first instant or sorcery you cast from your graveyard each turn, and the copy is created on the stack rather than cast. Spell-cast triggers like Thalia's Geistcaller's don't fire for it, and a bonus that needs a cast from a graveyard doesn't apply to it. Increasing Devotion makes ten Humans from a graveyard and five on the copy, so one flashback is 15 tokens.

What does the Mystic Intellect upgrade cost?

Eleven cards come to $37.37 at the cheapest released printings. Snapcaster Mage is $13.18, Steam Vents and Sacred Foundry are $9.60 and $10.04, and the other eight cards together are $4.55. Both shocklands appear in a Star Trek set releasing on 13 November 2026, so their prices may move.

Can Sevinne's deck run Cyclonic Rift or Mana Drain?

Both are legal in Commander. Cyclonic Rift is a Game Changer, which puts a deck in Bracket 3 at the least. Mana Drain is not a Game Changer, but it costs $51.64 and counters nothing while Lier, Disciple of the Drowned is out, since Lier stops all spells from being countered.

Do I need both Lier and Snapcaster Mage?

Lier is the one to buy first at $1.17. It gives every instant and sorcery in your graveyard flashback for as long as it stays on the battlefield. Snapcaster Mage does it once, for one card, but at instant speed and for two mana. If $13.18 is too much, Slickshot Lockpicker is $0.25 and does the same one-card job for three mana at sorcery speed.

Why does the Mystic Intellect upgrade keep six tapped lands?

Three are bounce lands that tap for two mana, Mystic Monastery taps for all three of the deck's colours, Myriad Landscape ramps two basics, and Tranquil Cove is the one I'd cut next. The six that go are the red tapped duals that untapped shocks and pain lands replace.
