Primal Genesis precon upgrade guide
Ghired and twelve other cards in this box populate, and nothing in it doubles the tokens they copy.
Ghired makes a 4/4 Rhino when he enters and populates every time he attacks, so the whole plan is a pile of token copies. Twelve other cards in the box print populate: Selesnya Eulogist, Trostani, Wayfaring Temple, Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage, Ghired's Belligerence, Full Flowering, Rootborn Defenses, Trostani's Judgment, Druid's Deliverance, Sundering Growth, Song of the Worldsoul and Growing Ranks. Second Harvest copies every token you control. Most of them add one body at a time, and none of the 99 doubles a token as it's created. Doubling Season does, and at $29.21 it is about three quarters of the $38.56 the eleven swaps cost.
The mana is the second finding. Ten of the 39 lands always enter tapped, only four cards ramp (Sol Ring, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Cultivate and Farseek), with Explore adding a land drop, and 34 of the 60 spells cost four or more. Red is the thin colour. Ghired needs it, four spells print {R}{R} (Tectonic Hellion, Feldon of the Third Path, Heart-Piercer Manticore and Ghired's Belligerence), and the 17 red sources give you {R}{R} by turn three 48.1% of the time on the play. Prices are October 2026 at the cheapest released printing, a promo or a special set for some cards.

100 cards, 39 lands (19 basic), 26 creatures, average mana value 3.62. Mana sources: 21 white, 19 red, 24 green.

What are the best Primal Genesis upgrades?
Eleven swaps come to $38.56, and this is the order I'd buy them in:
- Doubling Season ($29.21). Every token the deck makes comes out twice, including the copy Ghired makes when he attacks, which is also created tapped and attacking. The sections on what it does to each populate card go through the numbers.
- Cathars' Crusade ($4.07). A +1/+1 counter on every creature you control each time a creature enters, which a token deck triggers constantly. It and Doubling Season feed each other.
- Trostani Discordant ($0.31) and Mirror Entity ($1.01). One gives the team +1/+1 and two lifelink Soldiers on arrival, the other sets every creature's base power and toughness to X.
- Swords to Plowshares ($0.99). The box's cheapest answer to a creature costs three mana, and this one costs {W}. Argued in the cuts section.
- Arcane Signet ($0.39), Kodama's Reach ($1.54) and Wood Elves ($0.26). Three more ramp cards for a list that has four.
- Rootbound Crag ($0.28), Clifftop Retreat ($0.19) and Sunpetal Grove ($0.31). Three untapped duals that replace three taplands, argued in the mana section.
Doubling Season, and what it does to each populate card
Doubling Season says that if an effect would create one or more tokens under your control, it creates twice that many. Populate is an effect that creates a token, so every populate card in the box doubles. Ghired's Rhino arrives as two when he enters. When he attacks, his populate creates two copies instead of one, and the ruling on Doubling Season is that the extra token has the same conditions, so both enter tapped and attacking. With a Rhino out, one attack adds 8 trample power to the board from the trigger alone.
The same doubling runs through the rest. Song of the Worldsoul and Growing Ranks put two tokens on the table instead of one, Full Flowering with X = 2 costs five mana and makes four, and Second Harvest creates two copies of each token, so your token count triples. Garruk, Primal Hunter enters with 6 loyalty instead of 3, and his +1 makes two Beasts. The +1 itself still adds only one loyalty, because Doubling Season doesn't double counters you put on as a cost.
Cathars' Crusade is the second half of that sentence. It triggers once for each creature that enters, so a doubled populate triggers it twice, and Doubling Season doubles each counter it places. One populate with both out puts four +1/+1 counters on every creature you control. I priced Parallel Lives and Anointed Procession too, and both are in the passed-on section below. Doubling Season costs $1.75 more than Parallel Lives and is the one that also doubles counters, which is why it goes first.
Trostani Discordant costs {3}{G}{W}, gives your other creatures +1/+1 and creates two 1/1 lifelink Soldiers when it enters. It also has a clause that returns any creature you own to you at your end step, which is a small insurance policy against a stolen Rhino. Mirror Entity costs {2}{W}. Its {X} ability sets every creature you control to X/X base power and toughness until end of turn, and bonuses from Intangible Virtue, Trostani Discordant and counters still apply on top. With four Soldiers and two Rhinos out, X = 5 turns all of them into 5/5s before the +1/+1 bonuses.
Three taplands become three untapped duals
Blossoming Sands, Graypelt Refuge and Kazandu Refuge each enter tapped and gain 1 life. Two make green or white and one makes red or green. In their place go Rootbound Crag (red or green), Clifftop Retreat (red or white) and Sunpetal Grove (green or white). Each enters untapped if you control one of its two basic land types, and the deck's 19 basics include 12 that satisfy Rootbound Crag (Mountain or Forest), 11 for Clifftop Retreat (Mountain or Plains) and 15 for Sunpetal Grove (Forest or Plains).
Arcane Signet taps for a colour in your commander's identity, which is all three, so the calculator counts it as a red, green and white source. The net effect on sources is red 17 to 19, white 20 to 21 and green unchanged at 24. Always-tapped lands go from ten to seven. {R} by turn two goes from 79.2% to 83.1%, {R}{R} by turn three from 48.1% to 54.8%, and {W}{W} by turn three from 58% to 61%.
That doesn't fix green. Thirteen spells want {G}{G}, two of them (Growing Ranks and Sundering Growth) payable with white instead, and the list has 24 green sources against the 36 the calculator wants for 90% by turn three, so {G}{G} sits at 69.4% before and after. Kodama's Reach and Wood Elves fetch lands the calculator doesn't count as sources, so the real figure is a little better than the tally says. I left the count at 39 lands because every land I could cut is a counted source in at least one colour, and all three colours are short.
Eight spells out and one answer in
Desolation Twin costs {10}. Its cast trigger makes a 10/10 Eldrazi token even if the spell is countered, so it isn't nothing. It's the only ten-drop in the box in a list that has 39 lands and four ramp cards, and Idol of Oblivion stays to make the same 10/10 for {8} and a sacrifice, while drawing cards on turns you create a token.
Tectonic Hellion costs {5}{R}{R}. When it attacks, each player who controls the most lands sacrifices two of them. A deck that ramps is often the player with the most lands, so the trigger can take two of yours, and the {R}{R} sits in the colour with the fewest sources. Emmara Tandris costs {5}{G}{W} and prevents all damage to your creature tokens. It stops combat damage and burn. It doesn't stop destroy, exile or sacrifice, and the box's own sweepers, Hour of Reckoning and Phyrexian Rebirth, destroy.
Feldon of the Third Path costs {1}{R}{R}. For {2}{R} and a tap it makes a hasty copy of a creature card in your graveyard that's sacrificed at the next end step. It needs a creature card in your graveyard and the copy lasts one turn. Tahngarth, First Mate costs {2}{R}{G} and is a 5/5 whose ability, once he is tapped, hands him to an attacking opponent for a combat. Nothing in it feeds a token. Scaretiller costs {4} for a 1/4 whose ramp only works when it becomes tapped, and the ways to tap it here are attacking with a 1/4 or convoking it into Hour of Reckoning.
Slice in Twain costs {2}{G}{G} to destroy an artifact or enchantment and draw a card. Sundering Growth does the destroying for two mana and populates, and Beast Within answers anything. Commander's Insignia costs {2}{W}{W} and gives your creatures +1/+1 for each time you've cast your commander from the command zone. It does nothing until Ghired has been cast, while Intangible Virtue gives tokens +1/+1 for two mana from the first turn it's out.
The box answers a creature with Beast Within (three mana, and the owner gets a 3/3 Beast), Naya Charm (three mana, 3 damage), Angel of Sanctions (five), Trostani's Judgment (six), Heart-Piercer Manticore (four, and it needs a creature to sacrifice) and Ghired's Belligerence, which deals X damage divided among your targets and populates for each one that dies. None does anything for fewer than three mana.
Swords to Plowshares exiles a creature for {W} at instant speed and gives its controller life equal to its power. The life is the price, and it's cheap against the 6/6 or 7/7 that would otherwise stop a Ghired attack. I considered Path to Exile at $0.84 as well, and I'd add it next, but I couldn't name a twelfth cut.
Why Hate Mirage, Lightning Greaves and both sweepers stay
Hate Mirage makes tokens that are copies of up to two opposing creatures, with haste, and exiles them at the next end step. On its own that's four mana for one attack. But the ruling is that a copy of one of those tokens doesn't have haste and isn't exiled, so any populate card in the deck turns a Hate Mirage token into a permanent copy of the other player's best creature. Ghired's own attack trigger is one of thirteen ways to do it, and the copy enters tapped and attacking. That's the reason it stays.
Lightning Greaves is an equipment that gives one creature haste and shroud, which reads poorly in a deck that wants many bodies. The one creature that matters is Ghired. Cast him with Greaves already out, equip for {0}, and he attacks the turn he lands: the Rhino from his enter trigger is summoning sick, but the copy his attack creates enters attacking. That's 6 power the turn he's cast, and shroud keeps targeted removal off the commander while he does it.
Hour of Reckoning destroys every creature that isn't a token, and it has convoke, so your tokens can pay the {4} of its {4}{W}{W}{W}. Your tokens survive it, and Ghired doesn't. Phyrexian Rebirth destroys all creatures and leaves you an X/X Horror, where X is the number destroyed. It kills your own tokens too, so Hour of Reckoning is the one I'd reach for first, and Fresh Meat after either one makes a 3/3 Beast for every creature of yours that died that turn, tokens included.
Three doublers and two cheap cards I left on the shelf
Parallel Lives ($27.46) and Anointed Procession ($53.77) say the same thing as the first half of Doubling Season. Parallel Lives is $1.75 cheaper than Doubling Season and I still put Doubling Season first, because it doubles counters and Parallel Lives doesn't. Stacking one on top would quadruple tokens, since each replacement effect applies, and that's where I'd spend next if you want a second doubler. Mondrak, Glory Dominus ($44.65) is a 4/4 for {2}{W}{W} that doubles tokens, which is the part Doubling Season already does, and the cheapest printing is a promo. None of the three is a Game Changer, so price alone is why they're passed.
Elspeth, Sun's Champion ($0.29) costs six, and her −3 destroys every creature with power 4 or greater, which includes the Rhinos. Her +1 makes three 1/1 Soldiers, a weak thing to populate. Nature's Lore ($2.23) fetches a Forest card onto the battlefield untapped and would have been a fourth added ramp card.
What the eleven swaps change
Average mana value falls from 3.88 to 3.62, and cards costing four or more go from 34 to 30. Cards costing seven or more drop from five to two, and the ten-drop is gone. Ramp cards go from four to seven. Creatures fall from 29 to 26 and legendary creatures from seven to five. Always-tapped lands go from ten to seven. The bracket floor stays at 1, and neither list has a Game Changer.

FAQ
Does Doubling Season double the token Ghired makes when he attacks?
Yes, and both copies enter tapped and attacking. Populate creates a token, Doubling Season replaces that with twice as many, and its ruling says the extra tokens carry the same conditions as the original. Ghired's Rhino also arrives as two when he enters, so a Ghired attack with a Rhino out adds 8 trample power from the trigger alone.
Can Ghired populate a token that can't attack, like a Sculpture or an Egg?
Yes. Effects that stop a token attacking, such as the Sculptures from Doomed Artisan or the defender on an Egg from Atla Palani, only affect declaring attackers, and the ruling says they don't stop a populated copy entering attacking. A copied Egg is a 0/1 on the attack, though, so the Rhino or the Dragon is the better pick.
Which token should Ghired's populate copy?
The one that does the most when it arrives attacking. In this list that's the 5/5 flying Dragon from Dragonmaster Outcast, which needs six lands at your upkeep. After it comes the 4/4 trample Rhino, which Ghired makes himself, and the 3/4 flying Bird from Wingmate Roc, which needs you to have attacked that turn. Giant Adephage makes the biggest copies at 7/7 trample, but only once it has connected. A copy of a token that is itself a copy takes on whatever the original copied, which is what makes a Hate Mirage token worth populating.
What do the eleven Primal Genesis swaps cost?
$38.56 in October 2026 prices at the cheapest released printing, which can be a promo. Doubling Season is $29.21 of it and the other ten swaps come to $9.35. The cheapest Doubling Season is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Source Material printing, and Scryfall lists no reprint of it in an upcoming set.
Does Hour of Reckoning kill my tokens?
No. It destroys nontoken creatures only, so Ghired and every other creature card dies and the tokens stay. It has convoke, so tapping tokens pays the generic part of its cost. Phyrexian Rebirth is the one that kills everything, tokens included, and leaves a single Horror as big as the number destroyed.
Why Doubling Season and not Parallel Lives?
Doubling Season is $29.21 against $27.46 for Parallel Lives, and the extra $1.75 buys counter doubling, which matters with Cathars' Crusade and with Garruk, Primal Hunter entering with 6 loyalty. Parallel Lives only doubles tokens. Run both and each applies, so tokens quadruple.
How many lands does the upgraded Primal Genesis run?
39, the same as the box, with 19 basics. That is above the 35 to 38 the calculator treats as typical, but the calculator counts fetch lands as sources in every colour they can reach, and green, red and white are all still short of the 36 sources that 90% by turn three asks for. Three untapped duals replace three taplands and the count stays put.
