Obscura Operation precon upgrade guide

Ninjutsu needs an unblocked attacker, Kamiz creates one every time you attack, and the box prints two Ninjas to use it.

Ninjutsu can only be activated once blockers are declared, and it asks you to return an unblocked attacker to your hand. Kamiz, Obscura Oculus supplies one every time you attack. Its trigger makes one attacking creature unblockable for the turn, has it connive, and then gives double strike to another attacker with lesser power. The box prints two Ninjas to cash that in, Silent-Blade Oni and Fallen Shinobi. Both look expensive on the card, at mana values of 7 and 5, but their ninjutsu costs are {4}{U}{B} and {2}{U}{B}.

The rest of the list is already built to be let through. Fourteen of the 28 creatures besides Kamiz have a trigger that fires when they damage a player, from Thief of Sanity and Shadowmage Infiltrator to Wrexial and Drana, and Skyway Robber gets one once it escapes. What the box lacks is the Ninja half of that engine.

Seven swaps fix it. They cost $8.44 at the cheapest printings, take the deck from two Ninjas to six and from eight always-tapped lands to seven, and drop a sweeper that would have hit the team Kamiz is trying to keep attacking. I left most of the mana alone on purpose, and the lands section has the numbers behind that.

What are the best Obscura Operation upgrades?

Ninjas first, then the removal, then the one land. Prices are October 2026 market prices at the cheapest released printing, which can be a promo, and the seven add up to $8.44. The cuts that make room are further down.

  1. Ninja of the Deep Hours ($1.44). Ninjutsu {1}{U}. Two mana swaps a 2/2 in for any unblocked attacker, and it draws a card when it connects.
  2. Ingenious Infiltrator ($1.93). Ninjutsu {U}{B}. It draws a card whenever any Ninja you control damages a player, so a Ninja with its own draw trigger, like Ninja of the Deep Hours, draws two.
  3. Moon-Circuit Hacker ($0.20). Ninjutsu {U}. A 2/1 that draws on a hit, and the discard that normally follows is waived if it entered this turn, which a ninjutsu entry always did.
  4. Throat Slitter ($2.52). Ninjutsu {2}{B}. On a hit it destroys target nonblack creature that player controls, so the removal arrives with the attack.
  5. Anguished Unmaking ($1.62). An instant that exiles any nonland permanent for {1}{W}{B}, at the price of 3 life. It takes the slot of Nightmare Unmaking.
  6. Brazen Borrower ($0.53). A 3/1 flash flier for {1}{U}{U}, with Petty Theft ({1}{U}, instant) returning a nonland permanent an opponent controls to its owner's hand. Flash lets it arrive at the end of an opponent's turn and attack on yours, and Petty Theft can bounce a blocker first, with the Borrower cast from exile afterward.
  7. Isolated Chapel ($0.20). Replaces Temple of Silence one for one. White or black, and it enters untapped if you control a Plains or a Swamp, which 11 of the 17 basics are.

A guaranteed unblocked attacker is what ninjutsu is waiting for

Kamiz's trigger goes on the stack as attackers are declared, before anyone blocks. By the time blockers are chosen, its target can't be blocked, so at least one attacker is unblocked and ninjutsu has something to return. That's the condition a ninjutsu card normally waits for an opponent to grant.

A Ninja put in with ninjutsu enters attacking the same player the returned creature was attacking. It was never declared as an attacker, so Kamiz doesn't trigger a second time and the Ninja can't pick up the double strike, which was handed out when the trigger resolved. Activate during the declare blockers step, because wait longer and the Ninja usually misses combat damage.

Which creature goes back to hand matters. The creature Kamiz pointed at is the surest unblocked one, but it's also the one carrying whatever counter the connive just earned, and returning it throws that counter away. If a second attacker goes unblocked, return that one. The best candidates are the creatures whose enter triggers you want again. Whirler Rogue makes two 1/1 flying Thopters each time it enters, Aerial Extortionist exiles a nonland permanent that its owner may cast again, and Misfortune Teller exiles a graveyard card and makes a Rogue, a Treasure or 3 life depending on what it was.

Six Ninjas now run from one mana to six: Moon-Circuit Hacker for {U}, Ninja of the Deep Hours for {1}{U}, Ingenious Infiltrator for {U}{B}, Throat Slitter for {2}{B}, Fallen Shinobi for {2}{U}{B} and Silent-Blade Oni for {4}{U}{B}. A single open blue mana is enough to start the chain. Strionic Resonator, already in the box, pushes the engine further, since it can copy Kamiz's trigger for a second unblockable attacker, and the FAQ covers how.

Why only one land changes

Temple of Silence is the tapped land that costs the least to lose, because the only thing it has is a scry. It makes white or black, so Isolated Chapel replaces it without moving a single source count: 27 black, 28 blue and 25 white before and after. The only other tapped two-color land is Creeping Tar Pit, which is staying for reasons below. Everything else that enters tapped counts as a source of all three colors, from Arcane Sanctum and Path of Ancestry to the Thriving lands and Myriad Landscape, which fetches two basics. I tested replacing each of them with a shockland, and every swap costs a source of the third color.

The real gap is the double pips, and the box is short of them in all three colors. Black has 27 sources for the 36 the calculator wants to cast {B}{B} by turn three at 90%, which gives 76.4%. Blue has 28 and gets 78.5%, and white has 25 against the 30 needed for {W}{W} by turn five, which gives 82.4%. Thirty-eight lands can't close that, so the fix is asking less of them. The cuts remove Nightmare Unmaking, which needs {B}{B}, and Stolen Identity and the Memory half of Commit // Memory, which both need {U}{U}, while Brazen Borrower adds one {U}{U} card. Blue's double-pip spells go from eight to seven and black's from seven to six, and none of the four new Ninjas asks for two of one color.

Watery Grave ($9.97), Godless Shrine ($8.50) and Hallowed Fountain ($7.41) are the lands most players would reach for, and together they would take the bill from $8.44 to $34.32. All three return in Star Trek on 13 November 2026, which is a reason to wait if you want them. Creeping Tar Pit stays even though it enters tapped. For {1}{U}{B} it becomes a 3/2 that can't be blocked, so it's a land that doubles as an unblockable attacker.

Six spells give way, and the expensive cards that keep theirs

Commit // Memory. Commit ({3}{U}) puts a spell or nonland permanent second from the top of its owner's library, which delays an answer rather than ending it. Memory ({4}{U}{U}) has every player shuffle hand and graveyard into their library and draw seven. A deck that wins by hitting players has little reason to hand each of them a fresh seven.

Smuggler's Share. It's worth about $10 in the box and does nothing on a turn where no opponent drew two cards or put two lands onto the battlefield.

Life Insurance. Five mana for an extort drain and a Treasure each time a nontoken creature dies, with a life point lost each time. It does nothing in combat, which is where this deck lives.

Stolen Identity. A six-mana copy of an artifact or creature with cipher. The cipher is real, since encoded on an unblockable creature it casts a free copy each time that creature connects, but the Ninjas turn a hit into cards or removal at one to four mana.

Nightmare Unmaking. It exiles each creature with power greater than, or less than, the number of cards in your hand. That's a sweeper that takes your own attackers with it, and Austere Command and Dusk // Dawn stay as the other two, so the deck keeps its sweepers.

Mask of the Schemer. Five mana before it first connects, three to cast and two to equip, for a connive that Kamiz already hands out free every combat. Mask of Riddles does a similar job for four mana in total and stays, and it's the closest call here. Thousand-Faced Shadow ($2.19) is the swap if you want a seventh Ninja: a flying 1-drop whose {2}{U}{U} ninjutsu copies another attacker as a token.

The cards that look costly and stay do so for reasons that belong to this deck. Silent-Blade Oni and Fallen Shinobi are the Ninjas the whole plan is built on. Sun Titan is a 6/6 vigilance body that returns a permanent with mana value 3 or less every time it enters or attacks, and the deck has 17 cards at mana value 2 to return. Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer lets you cast a nonland card you discard from the graveyard, and Kamiz's connive, Daring Saboteur and Looter il-Kor all discard. Quietus Spike takes half a player's life, rounded up, after every hit it lands, and the creature carrying it can be the one Kamiz made unblockable. In Too Deep has split second, so opponents can't answer it with spells or non-mana abilities, and none of the deck's other removal can say that.

Where the numbers move

Creatures go from 29 to 34 counting Kamiz, and Ninjas from 2 to 6, which makes them 18% of the creature count. Average mana value falls from 3.62 to 3.44. Every addition clears the Game Changers list too, which keeps the floor at Bracket 1. The market total of the 100 cards goes from about $121 to about $115. The box already holds 17 draw cards against a typical 8 to 12, so I added no pure draw spell. The draw in this list arrives attached to bodies that have to connect first.

FAQ

Can Strionic Resonator copy Kamiz's attack trigger?

Yes. Strionic Resonator copies a triggered ability you control for {2} and a tap, so with Kamiz's trigger on the stack you can pay for a second one. The copy can take a new target, and the choices Kamiz makes on resolution are made again for it, so a second attacker can't be blocked, connives, and a second creature with lesser power gets double strike. It's a card worth about $7 at the printing the box ships, and it copies the hit trigger of a Ninja or of Thief of Sanity the same way.

Should I add Watery Grave, Godless Shrine and Hallowed Fountain?

They would raise the bill from $8.44 to $34.32, since the three cost $9.97, $8.50 and $7.41 at their cheapest printings. Each would replace a three-color land such as Arcane Sanctum or Path of Ancestry, and the color-source count drops by one in the third color every time, so they make the mana faster without making it more reliable. All three are reprinted in Star Trek on 13 November 2026, so the price may fall if you decide you want them.

Does a Ninja that arrives with ninjutsu set off Kamiz or get double strike?

Neither. A creature put onto the battlefield with ninjutsu is attacking but was never declared as an attacker, so Kamiz's whenever-you-attack trigger doesn't fire for it, and the double strike was handed out when that trigger resolved, before the Ninja existed. It still deals regular combat damage if you activate ninjutsu during the declare blockers step.

Which attacker should Kamiz's trigger point at?

The one with the most power. The double strike goes to another attacker with lesser power, chosen after the connive finishes, so discarding a nonland card and growing the target by a counter widens the field. With Sun Titan at 6/6 and Thief of Sanity at 2/2 attacking, aim at Sun Titan. It can't be blocked, and Thief of Sanity gets double strike, so if it connects it looks at the top three cards of that player's library twice.

Is Silent-Blade Oni playable when it costs seven mana?

Seven is the number nobody pays. Its ninjutsu cost is {4}{U}{B}, six mana paid after blockers, and a hit lets you look at that player's hand and cast a spell from it without paying its mana cost. It's the top rung of a ladder that starts at {U} with Moon-Circuit Hacker, and Kamiz supplies the unblocked attacker it needs.

Do these swaps change the bracket?

No. The box has a floor of Bracket 1 with nothing on the Game Changers list, and the seven additions don't change that, so the upgraded list stays there. The bracket checker will tell you the same for your own build.

Why not add Notion Thief, a Rogue with flash for $1.59?

Price isn't the reason. Notion Thief is a Game Changer, because it sends an opponent's extra draws to you, and one Game Changer moves a list from Bracket 1 to a floor of Bracket 3. If your pod plays at Bracket 3, it fits the colors.
