Chaos Incarnate precon upgrade guide

Of the 99 other cards in this box, one makes anybody attack, and Kardur’s own order only lasts until his controller’s next turn. The drain half of him then waits on attacks nobody is forced to make.

Kardur, Doomscourge has two abilities. When he enters, until your next turn, creatures your opponents control attack each combat if able and attack a player other than you if able. And whenever an attacking creature dies, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1. The ruling on the second one says it triggers no matter who controlled the attacker or who it was attacking, so the commander comes down to one instruction: get the table fighting, then collect on the bodies. The box starts the fight with Kardur himself and leaves one card, the six-mana Geode Rager, to keep it going. Nothing besides Kardur drains the table when a creature dies in combat. Sangromancer gains you 3 life when an opposing creature dies, and that is as close as the box gets.

What fills the rest of the deck is damage aimed at opponents. Seven cards hurt them without hurting you: Guttersnipe, Thermo-Alchemist, Tectonic Giant, Fiery Confluence, Breath of Malfegor, Explosion of Riches and Theater of Horrors, and Dictate of the Twin Gods doubles all of them. That plan works, but it never touches Kardur’s drain, so the swaps go at the other end: cards that keep opponents attacking, and cards that pay when anything dies. Six of the 40 lands also enter tapped every time, and five of those go. Ten swaps cost $42.29 at the cheapest released printing of each card as of October 2026 (it can be a promo), and $23.83 of that is one card.

What are the best Chaos Incarnate upgrades?

The order follows how much each card adds to Kardur’s fight-then-drain loop, and price decides none of it. The first five are $28.74 together and the five lands are $13.55.

  1. Dreadhound ($0.17): a 6/6 for six, the same body as the Rakshasa Debaser it replaces. Whenever a creature dies, each opponent loses 1 life, and when it enters it mills three and drains for each creature card among them. Next to Kardur, one attacker dying costs each opponent 2.
  2. The Meathook Massacre ($23.83): every creature gets -X/-X when it enters, and after that it drains in both directions. Each opponent loses 1 when a creature you control dies, and you gain 1 when an opponent’s dies. It is the dearest card on the list and the only one that doubles as a board wipe.
  3. Vengeful Ancestor ($0.48): a 3/4 flyer for four that goads a target creature when it enters and every time it attacks, and deals 1 damage to the controller of any goaded creature that attacks. It repeats, which is the thing the box lacks.
  4. Disrupt Decorum ($4.02): goads every creature you don’t control. Kardur’s order already covers the turn cycle he enters, so Decorum is the second round, the next time you want the table to turn on itself without recasting a commander.
  5. Infernal Grasp ($0.24): destroy target creature for two mana and 2 life, at instant speed. That is the fourth way to kill an attacker mid-combat, after Abrade, Terminate and Unlicensed Disintegration.
  6. Dragonskull Summit ($0.45), Sulfurous Springs ($0.46), Haunted Ridge ($1.25), Blackcleave Cliffs ($2.05) and Blood Crypt ($9.34): five lands that mostly enter untapped, in place of Temple of Malice, Akoum Refuge, Bloodfell Caves, Cinder Barrens and Urborg Volcano.

Five spells and those five lands come out, and they are further down.

Kardur never says goad, and two of the adds care

His text reads like goad, and the reminder text for goad is nearly word for word his ability, but the word isn’t on the card. That matters because Vengeful Ancestor’s damage fires when a goaded creature attacks, and a creature Kardur is steering isn’t one. The Ancestor pings creatures that Disrupt Decorum, Geode Rager or its own triggers goaded, so the cards work as a package: Kardur sets the first round, and the next round is the Ancestor, Decorum or a land drop with Geode Rager out.

The two overlap in the round they share. Both ask for the same attacks, so casting Decorum on the turn Kardur arrives buys no extra attacks. All it adds is the goaded status that Vengeful Ancestor reads. One difference is real: Kardur’s order catches creatures that enter after it resolves, and Decorum only touches what is on the battlefield when it resolves.

The card I would have added if the text were different is Bothersome Quasit ($12.99). It goads on every noncreature spell you cast, and goaded creatures your opponents control can’t block. A creature that can’t block can’t die blocking, and Kardur’s drain wants those blocks. Coronation of Chaos ($0.20) goads up to three creatures and stops them blocking. I left Quasit out for that reason and not for the price, and neither card is a Game Changer. Coronation’s clause only lasts for the turn you cast it, so it costs the plan less, but it goads three creatures where Disrupt Decorum goads all of them.

What one dead attacker pays once the drain cards are out

Put Kardur, Dreadhound, The Meathook Massacre and Sangromancer together and a single opposing attacker dying does four things. Kardur drains each opponent for 1 and you gain 1. Dreadhound drains each opponent for 1 more. The Meathook Massacre gains you 1, and Sangromancer lets you gain 3. That is 2 life gone from every opponent and 5 gained, which in a pod with three opponents is 6 life across the table from one creature dying in combat.

The deaths have to come from somewhere, and the box has fewer sources than it looks. Three instants kill an attacker mid-combat: Abrade for toughness 3 or less, Terminate and Unlicensed Disintegration. Soul Shatter is an instant too, but it makes the opponent sacrifice their highest mana value creature, which isn’t necessarily the one attacking. Infernal Grasp makes four.

Blasphemous Act and Deadly Tempest are sorceries, so nothing is attacking when they resolve and Kardur pays nothing. With Dreadhound out they still pay a lot: every creature they kill is 1 more from each opponent, so a Blasphemous Act that kills nine creatures besides Dreadhound is at least 9 life from each of them. Deadly Tempest costs you life too, one per creature of yours it destroys.

Eight mana for Magmatic Force is the price of 12 damage a round

Magmatic Force costs eight and deals 3 damage to any target at the beginning of each upkeep. In a four-player pod that is four upkeeps a turn cycle, so 12 damage to any targets every round, and 24 under Dictate. It is the only card here that deals damage at every player’s upkeep, which is why it survives a list this critical of six-drops.

Kaervek the Merciless costs seven and deals damage equal to the mana value of each spell an opponent casts, to any target. A five-mana spell cast at the table is 5 damage you choose the target of. Geode Rager is the only card besides Kardur that forces a fight. It is a 4/3 with first strike, and whenever a land enters under your control it goads each creature target player controls. Myriad Landscape puts two basics onto the battlefield when you sacrifice it, which is two more landfall triggers that can name two different players.

Six always-tapped lands become one, and double black doesn’t get easier

Temple of Malice, Akoum Refuge, Bloodfell Caves, Cinder Barrens and Urborg Volcano enter tapped every time, for a scry or a life point or nothing. Each taps for black or red, and so does every land that replaces it. Black sources stay at 30 and the odds of double black by turn three on the play stay at 82.2%. Fifteen spells want it after the swaps, one more than before. The swap is about speed and not about colour.

Dragonskull Summit enters untapped if you control a Swamp or a Mountain. There are 31 cards in the 99-card library with one of those types (29 basics, Smoldering Marsh and Blood Crypt), and the chance you have seen at least one of them in the nine cards of a turn-three hand on the play is 97.2%. Haunted Ridge is tapped only on your first or second land drop and Blackcleave Cliffs only on your fourth or later, so you will rarely hold both tapped at once. Sulfurous Springs always enters untapped and deals 1 damage to you each time you tap it for colour, which Dictate of the Twin Gods doubles to 2. Blood Crypt costs 2 life to enter untapped, and paying life isn’t damage, so Dictate leaves that alone. Myriad Landscape is the one always-tapped land that stays, because it fetches two basics.

Nihil Spellbomb exiles the graveyards three of your cards want, and four other cuts

Dredge the Mire puts a creature from each opponent’s graveyard onto the battlefield under your control, Sepulchral Primordial does it for up to one creature card per opponent, and Profane Command returns a creature from yours. Nihil Spellbomb exists to exile a graveyard. Rakdos Charm keeps that mode for two mana, so the Spellbomb is the one that goes.

Rakshasa Debaser is a 6/6 for six that reanimates from the defending player’s graveyard when it attacks, which is a third copy of a job Dredge the Mire and the Primordial already do, and it has to survive a turn to do it. Dreadhound is the same body for the same mana. Titan Hunter is a 4/5 for five that deals 4 damage to a player at their end step if no creature died that turn, and I am one of those players. Kardur’s rounds make deaths, but the quiet turns are mine, and dodging it costs a creature and two mana.

Sunbird’s Invocation is a six-mana enchantment that only pays off on spells you cast after it lands. The box has 13 cards that cost six or more, and with that many expensive cards already, a turn spent on one that pays off later is a turn I would spend on something else. Mana Geyser adds red for each tapped land your opponents control, and on your own turn that is the lands that entered tapped and little else.

FAQ

What does Kardur do in a two-player game?

His order says opposing creatures attack a player other than you if able, and if there is no such player they must attack you. In a two-player game there is nobody else, so Kardur, Disrupt Decorum and Geode Rager all point the opponent’s creatures straight at you. Every swap in this guide assumes three or more players at the table.

Does Vengeful Ancestor punish the creatures Kardur forces to attack?

No. Kardur’s text makes creatures attack and never uses the word goad, and Vengeful Ancestor’s damage only happens when a goaded creature attacks. The goads in this deck are Disrupt Decorum, Geode Rager and Vengeful Ancestor’s own enters and attack triggers, and a creature Kardur is steering does not count.

How much do the ten Chaos Incarnate swaps cost, and what do I buy first?

$42.29 at the cheapest released printing of each card, as of October 2026, and that can be a promo. The Meathook Massacre is $23.83 and Blood Crypt is $9.34, so the other eight cards come to $9.12. Dreadhound is $0.17 and is the first one I would buy. A Blood Crypt printing is scheduled for 13 November 2026, so its price may move.

How much does one dead attacker drain with Dreadhound and The Meathook Massacre out?

Each opponent loses 2 life, one from Kardur and one from Dreadhound, and you gain 5: 1 from Kardur, 1 from The Meathook Massacre and 3 from Sangromancer if it is out. With three opponents that is 6 life lost across the table for one creature dying in combat.

Is Coveted Jewel safe in a deck that forces attacks?

It is safer than usual while Kardur’s order lasts. The Jewel changes hands when an opponent’s creatures attack you and aren’t blocked, and his order sends them at somebody else whenever somebody else is a legal target. When the order ends at the start of your next turn nothing stops them, so the Jewel is still a bet on your blockers in a pod that isn’t being forced.

Should I cut lands to 38?

I left the box at 40 because the problem isn’t the count, it’s that 15 spells want double black and the odds of having it by turn three are 82.2% before and after the swaps. Cutting one Swamp from the box list moves that to 80.4%. If you want 38 anyway, trim the lands that tap for colourless first: Stensia Bloodhall and Myriad Landscape, then Molten Slagheap, which only makes black or red after you have paid to store the mana.
