Grave Danger precon upgrade guide
Zombie Apocalypse destroys every Human on the battlefield, and the commander of this deck is one of them.
Gisa and Geralf is a Human Wizard. Zombie Apocalypse puts every Zombie in your graveyard back onto the battlefield tapped and then destroys all Humans, and its ruling is explicit that it means everyone's, not just yours. The box ships three Humans: Gisa and Geralf, Vela the Night-Clad and Liliana's Devotee. Cast the sweeper and all three die. You can put the commander in the command zone instead, but then she is a recast away from casting anything from your graveyard.
That's a fixable oddity. The bigger picture is a good graveyard deck with a heavy top end. 26 of its 30 creatures are Zombies, and Gisa and Geralf mills four when she enters and then lets you cast one Zombie creature spell from your graveyard each turn. What slows it down is the curve. 18 cards cost five or more, six of them cost seven or more, and five of the 39 lands always enter tapped. Black also runs short of double-pip sources. The swaps below go after the curve, the tapped lands and the Humans, and they raise the Zombie count. Black's double pips get a smaller fix, further down.
One more thing before the list. None of the hundred cards is a Game Changer, before or after, so the floor reads Bracket 1 either way.

100 cards, 39 lands (31 basic), 31 creatures, average mana value 3.45. Mana sources: 26 blue, 31 black.
No Game Changers and no mass land denial, so it sets no bracket floor. How brackets work →
What are the best Grave Danger upgrades?
Buy them in this order. Every price is the cheapest released printing of that card as of October 2026, and Read the Bones is a Starter Commander Decks printing.
- Diregraf Colossus ($0.68). It enters with a +1/+1 counter for each Zombie card in your graveyard and makes a tapped 2/2 Zombie whenever you cast a Zombie spell. A spell cast from the graveyard is still cast, so Gisa and Geralf's recast pays out a token every turn.
- Lord of the Undead ($2.12). Other Zombies get +1/+1, and for {1}{B} and a tap it returns a Zombie card from your graveyard to your hand. That is a second recursion each turn on top of the commander's.
- Cryptbreaker ($0.31). A one-mana Zombie that turns a spare card into a 2/2 Zombie for {1}{B} and a tap, and draws you a card (for 1 life) when you tap three untapped Zombies.
- Go for the Throat ($0.28) and Infernal Grasp ($0.24). Two-mana instants that kill a creature. Go for the Throat can't hit artifact creatures and Infernal Grasp costs you 2 life.
- Drowned Catacomb ($0.42), Underground River ($0.53), Darkslick Shores ($1.70) and Watery Grave ($9.56). Four duals that come in untapped most of the time, in place of four that never do.
- Death Baron ($0.79), Read the Bones ($0.20) and Phyrexian Arena ($2.27). Another anthem that also hands deathtouch to the team, then two ways to refill your hand, with Phyrexian Arena costing you 1 life each upkeep.
All twelve total $19.10. The twelve they replace are in the next section and the decklist further down.
Name Zombie both times
Two cards in the box make you choose a creature type. Crippling Fear gives -3/-3 to every creature that isn't of the type you name, and with 29 of 31 creatures being Zombies after the swaps, it is close to a one-sided sweeper for four mana. The commander survives as a 1/1, because she is a 4/4. It only affects creatures that are on the battlefield as it resolves, so anything you cast afterwards is safe from it.
Distant Melody draws a card for each permanent of the chosen type that you control, and it counts tokens. Name Zombie there as well. The next largest type is Wizard, with 7 creatures, and it leaves out 23 of your Zombies.
Four tapped lands become four untapped ones
Five of the 39 lands always enter tapped: Temple of Deceit, Dismal Backwater, Jwar Isle Refuge, Salt Marsh and Submerged Boneyard. Four of them go. Temple stays because its scry 1 is worth the tapped turn. The two that gain a life each, Dismal Backwater and Jwar Isle Refuge, are the cuts with the weakest case against them, since the gain is one life.
Drowned Catacomb comes in untapped as long as you control an Island or a Swamp, and 31 of the deck's lands are basics. Underground River is always untapped and pings you for 1 when you tap it for colour. Darkslick Shores is untapped while you control two or fewer other lands, so it is a turn-one to turn-three card, and Sunken Hollow, which wants two basics, covers the later turns. Watery Grave is untapped if you pay 2 life. After the swap one land always enters tapped and five are conditional.
Four duals for four duals doesn't change the source count, though. Black stays at 31 sources and blue at 26. The calculator's odds of double black by turn three stay at 83.9%, short of the 90% line by five sources, and 17 spells now ask for it where 16 did, because Lord of the Undead, Death Baron and Phyrexian Arena arrive and Necromantic Selection and Open the Graves leave. Black is the thin side, and the box has 13 Islands to 18 Swamps. Changing two Islands for Swamps lifts double black to 86.9%, and blue's turn-two odds drop from 92.1% to 90.1%. Don't make a third, because blue falls to 89.0%. The two blue-heavy cards, Enter the God-Eternals and Geralf's Mindcrusher, get a little worse for it.
Watery Grave is half the bill at $9.56, and it is the card that can move. A reprint arrives in Star Trek on 13 November 2026. If you can wait, it may cost less, and Drowned Catacomb and Underground River do the same job for under a dollar each.
What the engine does once the new Zombies are in
Gisa and Geralf's permission is once during each of your turns, and it follows normal timing. A Zombie card that lands in your graveyard during your main phase with an empty stack can be cast before any player has a chance to remove it. So the order of a good turn is: mill, then cast from the graveyard, and every mill source in the box matters. Her own enter trigger mills four. Mire Triton mills two, Pilfered Plans mills two, Geralf's Mindcrusher mills five from a player you choose and Liliana, Untouched by Death mills three with each +1.
Laboratory Drudge is the card in the box already built for this. At each end step it draws a card if you cast a spell from a graveyard or activated an ability of a card in one that turn, and Gisa's cast qualifies. Diregraf Colossus fits the same loop from the other side: a recast Zombie is a cast Zombie, so the token arrives whether or not the creature started in your hand.
Lord of the Undead matters because the commander's permission is capped at one. From the turn after it lands, its tap ability returns a Zombie card to your hand, which gets you a second Zombie spell in a turn without needing the graveyard permission at all. Cryptbreaker asks you to tap three untapped Zombies, and several of the box's Zombies arrive tapped (Army of the Damned, Necrotic Hex, Colossus's tokens), so that draw ability wants a turn to wait.
Death Baron and Lord of the Undead don't just stack with the three lords already in the box, Cemetery Reaper, Lord of the Accursed and Diregraf Captain. They stack with Liliana's Mastery too, and every lord in that group is a Zombie creature, so Gisa can bring any of them back after a sweeper.
Relentless Dead and the other Zombies I left out
Relentless Dead is the best Zombie I left out. It is a two-mana creature with menace that can return itself to your hand for {B}, or pay {X} to bring back another Zombie with mana value X when it dies. It costs $11.87 and wants {B}{B} on turn two, which 31 black sources deliver 78.1% of the time. Undead Alchemist ($0.74) turns creature cards milled from an opponent's library into 2/2 Zombies. But the deck's mill that can target an opponent is Geralf's Mindcrusher, Pilfered Plans and Enter the God-Eternals, and a four-mana creature that waits on those doesn't beat a slot spent on Colossus or Lord of the Undead. Neither of them is on the Game Changers list.
What leaves, and the big spells that stay
Start at the top of the curve. Lotleth Giant costs seven, and its damage is one for each creature card in your graveyard, which is a number the rest of the deck is working to lower by casting those creatures. Necromantic Selection also costs seven. It destroys every creature, yours included, and returns a single one of them as a Zombie, in a deck that has spent the whole game building a board. Vela the Night-Clad is the third. Six mana gives her intimidate and gives it to everything else you control, but intimidate still lets artifact creatures and creatures that share a colour with the attacker block, so a black Zombie still meets every black blocker, and she is a Human, which brings the sweeper problem back.
Open the Graves and Curse of Disturbance are both enchantments that do nothing the turn they land. Open the Graves needs a nontoken creature of yours to die, and many of this deck's bodies are tokens. Curse of Disturbance makes a Zombie whenever the enchanted player is attacked, so its value depends on someone else's combat decisions. Liliana's Devotee is the small cut: a Human that gives Zombies +1/+0 where the lords now in the deck give +1/+1.
Undermine and Sinister Sabotage are the two counterspells. Both want UU, and the box has four such spells in total with 26 blue sources, which gives a 74.2% chance of finding UU by turn three. With the counterspells gone the only UU cards left are Enter the God-Eternals and Geralf's Mindcrusher, at five and six mana, and blue's double-pip odds by turn five are 84.4%. A deck that spends its turn recasting a Zombie from the graveyard isn't holding up three mana.
Now the ones that stay. Army of the Damned, Necrotic Hex and Overseer of the Damned still cost seven or eight, and each does something in a deck full of Zombies that a smaller card can't. Army makes thirteen tapped 2/2 Zombies and can be cast again from the graveyard with flashback for ten. Necrotic Hex has each player sacrifice six creatures and gives you six tapped 2/2 Zombies. Each of those changes the board at once if it resolves, and 39 lands plus eight ramp pieces is the mana to get there. Overseer is a flier that destroys a creature on entering, and Scourge of Nel Toth can be cast from your graveyard for {B}{B} and the sacrifice of two creatures, so once it's in the graveyard its printed seven is optional.
Syphon Flesh costs five and looks like a cut, but each opponent sacrifices a creature and you create a 2/2 Zombie for every one that does, which is up to three bodies at a four-player table. It stays. So do Cruel Revival, which kills a non-Zombie at instant speed and returns a Zombie card to your hand, and Gray Merchant of Asphodel, which drains for your devotion to black and is a Zombie itself. Gravespawn Sovereign costs six, and its ability taps five untapped Zombies to put any creature card from any graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. Five untapped Zombies is a real cost, but the token makers in the deck supply bodies for it.

FAQ
Does Zombie Apocalypse destroy Gisa and Geralf?
Yes. Zombie Apocalypse puts every Zombie in your graveyard back onto the battlefield tapped and then destroys all Humans, and the ruling confirms it hits every player's Humans, not only yours. Gisa and Geralf is a Human Wizard, so she is destroyed unless you choose to put her in the command zone, which costs {2} more to recast. Cast it when you want the Zombies back more than you want her on the battlefield.
How much does the Grave Danger upgrade cost?
Twelve cards come to $19.10 at the cheapest released printing of each, as of October 2026. Watery Grave is $9.56 of that. The next dearest are Phyrexian Arena at $2.27 and Lord of the Undead at $2.12. A reprint of Watery Grave arrives in Star Trek on 13 November 2026, so that price may fall.
Which creature type should I name with Crippling Fear and Distant Melody?
Zombie for both. Crippling Fear gives -3/-3 to every creature that isn't a Zombie, and after the swaps 29 of the deck's 31 creatures are Zombies, so it hits almost nothing of yours. Distant Melody draws a card for each permanent of the chosen type you control, tokens included. The next biggest type is Wizard with 7 creatures, which would leave 23 Zombies out of the count.
Should I swap Islands for Swamps in Grave Danger?
Two of them, and no more. The box has 13 Islands and 18 Swamps, and black has the thin side: 31 sources give an 83.9% chance of double black by turn three. Moving two Islands to Swamps lifts that to 86.9% and keeps your first blue source by turn two at 90.1%. A third swap pushes blue under the calculator's 90% line.
What does Laboratory Drudge do next to Gisa and Geralf?
It draws you a card at the beginning of each end step if you cast a spell from a graveyard or activated an ability of a card in a graveyard that turn. Casting a Zombie from your graveyard with Gisa and Geralf meets that condition, so on every turn the engine runs it pays out a card at your end step.
Do the amass cards in Grave Danger each make a new Zombie Army?
Only the first one does. Amass puts counters on an Army you already control and only creates a 0/0 Army token if you have none. Six cards in the deck amass, so they grow one Zombie rather than making six. That makes one large target for removal, and it counts as a single body toward the three untapped Zombies Cryptbreaker taps and the five Gravespawn Sovereign taps.
