Arcane Maelstrom precon upgrade guide

Kalamax copies your first instant each turn only while it's tapped, and the 25 instants in this box come with one six-drop that taps it as part of casting one.

Kalamax is a 4/4 for {1}{G}{U}{R}. When you cast the first instant of a turn, it copies that spell, but only if it's tapped. It checks again when the ability resolves, so it has to be tapped at both moments. Every copy of an instant puts a +1/+1 counter on it. The box has 25 instants, so the fuel is fine. The part nobody planned for is the tapping. Kalamax can't tap itself, so the plan is to attack with it, and the help in the box is thin. Lightning Greaves gives it haste and shroud for {0}. Shiny Impetus, Psychic Impetus and Predatory Impetus goad it into attacking every combat. Wort, the Raidmother can tap it as the conspire cost of a red or green instant, for six mana. A commander that has to walk into three opponents to do its one job is the thing to fix.

Two smaller findings sit under that. The box has 12 lands that always enter tapped, and red has 20 sources for ten cards with two red or red-hybrid symbols in their cost. And 15 cards cost five or more, four of them seven, in a deck whose best turns are cheap ones.

What are the best Arcane Maelstrom upgrades?

Ranked by how much each does for this deck. Prices are October 2026 market prices at the cheapest released printing, and the whole list of 15 is $16.47. The full swap list is under what leaves.

  1. Springleaf Drum ($0.24). Tap an untapped creature you control as part of its cost and it adds one mana of any color. Tap Kalamax for it before you cast an instant and the trigger is live. It works the turn Kalamax arrives, because tapping a creature as a cost ignores summoning sickness.
  2. Veyran, Voice of Duality ($1.97). A triggered ability of a permanent you control that triggers because you cast or copy an instant or sorcery triggers an additional time. Both of Kalamax's abilities qualify, so the first instant each turn is copied twice, and every copy puts two counters on Kalamax.
  3. Beast Within ($0.47). Destroy any permanent at instant speed. Kalamax's copy picks a new target, so one cast answers two permanents, and each of their controllers gets a 3/3.
  4. Archmage Emeritus ($0.59). It draws a card whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery, so one copied instant draws you two cards from it before the instant itself resolves.
  5. Brazen Borrower ($0.50). Petty Theft is an instant for {1}{U}, so it's a bounce spell Kalamax can copy, and the 3/1 flash flier is there afterwards.
  6. Steam Vents ($10.05). A blue-red land that enters untapped for 2 life. It's $10.05 of the $16.47, so it's the part to buy last. The mana section has the case.

The window opens once a turn, and cheap instants spend it

Kalamax's first ability looks at the whole turn. If you cast an instant before Kalamax is tapped, the next one you cast that turn is not your first, and nothing is copied until the next turn. So the order is fixed. Tap Kalamax, then cast the instant you want twice. Tapping it with the Drum leaves it tapped until your next untap step, which means the first instant you cast on each opponent's turn is copied as well. Glademuse draws you a card for every spell you cast on someone else's turn, so those casts pay twice. It does the same for an opponent who casts something on yours.

The best instants to put in the window are the ones whose copy does the same work again. Comet Storm is the clearest. A copy has the same X and the same number of targets as the original, because the kicker count carries over to it, and the copy can pick new targets, so Comet Storm cast with X=3 and kicked twice hits three targets for 3 damage each and then three more targets for the copy. Prophetic Bolt deals 4 damage and digs four cards deep, twice. Fact or Fiction shows five cards, and then another five. Beast Within does its job twice.

The instants that burn the window by habit are the cheap ones. Frantic Search, Growth Spiral, Natural Connection and Evolution Charm are all easy to cast first because they cost little, and cast first they take the copy. Cast them after the good one. The reverse is a trap, and the trap is the reason I didn't add Brainstorm or Opt, the usual cheap cantrips: a copied Brainstorm is a poor use of the one copy you get.

Copies aren't cast. That matters for the payoffs. Talrand, Murmuring Mystic, Lunar Mystic and Niblis of Frost all trigger when you cast an instant or sorcery, so Kalamax's copy feeds none of them. Archmage Emeritus and Veyran trigger on casting or copying, which makes them the two payoffs that grow with the commander instead of beside it. Young Pyromancer is the cheapest of the cast-only kind, and it's here as a two-drop that makes a body per spell in the turns before Kalamax lands.

What leaves: the top end, two auras and four lands

The 15 cuts are Hunting Pack, Swarm Intelligence, Ravenous Gigantotherium, Predatory Impetus, Psychic Impetus, Whiplash Trap, Clash of Titans, Curious Herd, Pako, Haldan, Crop Rotation, Scavenger Grounds, Rupture Spire, Mosswort Bridge and Oran-Rief. The nine adds not ranked above are Lightning Bolt, Abrade, Fact or Fiction, Mana Leak, Young Pyromancer, Talisman of Creativity, Sulfur Falls, Shivan Reef and Rootbound Crag.

Hunting Pack, Swarm Intelligence and Ravenous Gigantotherium are the three plain seven-drops. Hunting Pack is a storm card, so it makes a 4/4 Beast plus one more for every spell cast before it that turn, and seven mana is a lot to pay when the same turn has to hold those other spells. Swarm Intelligence copies every instant or sorcery you cast, which covers more spells than Kalamax's first-instant rule and needs no tapping, but it takes seven mana before it copies anything, and Djinn Illuminatus already covers the seven-mana copy slot as a 3/5 flier. Gigantotherium is a 3/3 for seven unless you sacrifice creatures to it, and each creature it damages hits it back for its own power.

Predatory Impetus and Psychic Impetus go and Shiny Impetus stays. All three goad the creature they enchant, and one goad aura is enough of a backup for the Drum. Predatory costs five for +3/+3 and a must-be-blocked clause, and Psychic gives +2/+2 and a scry 2 whenever the creature attacks.

Whiplash Trap and Curious Herd are conditional in ways this deck can't promise. Whiplash Trap costs {U} only if an opponent had two or more creatures enter this turn, and otherwise it's five mana to bounce two creatures. Curious Herd makes a 3/3 Beast for each artifact one chosen opponent controls, which is zero against a deck with none. Clash of Titans is five mana to make two creatures fight, and Lightning Bolt and Abrade deal 3 damage to a creature for one and two.

Pako and Haldan are one plan split over two slots. Haldan's second ability only matters for exiled cards with fetch counters, and the only source of those in the box is Pako attacking. Together that's eight mana across two cards to exile the top card of each library when a 3/3 attacks, and Haldan on his own is a 1/4. Crop Rotation is a one-mana instant that sacrifices a land to fetch any land. It's also the only Game Changer in the box. Cutting it takes the deck's bracket floor from 3 to 1, because none of the 15 adds is a Game Changer.

Nine tapped lands instead of twelve, and where the red comes from

The four land cuts each have their own reason. Rupture Spire enters tapped and is sacrificed unless you pay {1}, so any color costs a tapped turn and {1}. Mosswort Bridge enters tapped, and its hideaway card is free only if your creatures have total power 10 or more, and none of the deck's seven Wizards has more than 2 power. Oran-Rief, the Vastwood enters tapped and adds counters to green creatures that entered this turn, and five of the deck's 23 creatures are green after the swaps. Scavenger Grounds makes only colorless mana, and its ability exiles every graveyard, including the one this deck draws on with Surreal Memoir, Charmbreaker Devils, Goblin Dark-Dwellers and Chemister's Insight.

The replacements are Steam Vents, Sulfur Falls, Shivan Reef and Rootbound Crag, with Talisman of Creativity joining them as an untapped red and blue source. Always-tapped lands go from 12 to 9. The numbers on color sources need one correction first. The counter reads Springleaf Drum as a source of every color, and it isn't one, because it needs an untapped creature, so I take one off each total (the summary strip above shows the counter's 23 blue, 25 red and 24 green). On that count red goes from 20 sources to 24, blue from 19 to 22 and green from 25 to 23. The odds of {R}{R} on the play by turn three go from 58.0% to 69.4%. One red source by turn two goes from 84.8% to 90.1%, and one blue source from 83.1% to 87.7%. Green gives up a little, from 91.2% to 89.0% for one source by turn two, and only three cards print two green or green-hybrid symbols.

I'd be overselling it to call the mana fixed. Getting to 90% on {R}{R} by turn three takes 36 sources, and nine cards still print two red or red-hybrid symbols. Chasing that with more expensive lands isn't worth the money, which is why Stomping Ground ($7.00) and Breeding Pool ($9.57) aren't on the list. Each adds one color the deck is short of and one it isn't, and the lands I did add already cover red and blue. Steam Vents, Stomping Ground and Breeding Pool are all reprinted in Star Trek on 13 November 2026, so Steam Vents at $10.05 may come down. It's the one purchase on this list I'd wait on.

Six-drops and auras I argued with myself about

Lightning Greaves is the equipment on the list that looks like a cut in a go-wide deck. This isn't a go-wide deck. It's one commander that needs to be tapped, and Greaves lets Kalamax attack the turn it arrives and keeps it from being targeted afterwards. Shiny Impetus stays as the second tapper, since a goaded Kalamax has to attack, and it makes a Treasure each time it does. A 6/6 that has to attack every turn can die doing it, which is the reason it's a backup and not the plan.

Wort is the one card here that taps Kalamax while you cast an instant, and it brings two 1/1 Goblin Warriors. It costs six, and its conspire needs two untapped creatures that share a color with the spell. Etali and Melek are six-drops that work without Kalamax on the table or tapped. Etali exiles the top card of each library when it attacks and lets you cast any of them free. Melek lets you cast instants and sorceries from the top of your library and copies each one you cast that way, and every instant it copies puts a counter on Kalamax. Charmbreaker Devils returns a random instant or sorcery to your hand each upkeep. Prophetic Bolt costs five and deals 4 damage while digging four cards deep, which makes it the best first instant in the list after Comet Storm. Niblis of Frost is a 3/3 flier that taps one of an opponent's creatures, and keeps it tapped through their next untap step, whenever you cast an instant or sorcery.

I kept the three bouncelands, Gruul Turf, Izzet Boilerworks and Simic Growth Chamber, even though each enters tapped. They return a land to your hand, so one land drop becomes two mana and a replayable land. Eon Frolicker is the call I'd expect someone to push back on. It's a 5/5 flier for four, and when you cast it a target opponent takes an extra turn after this one while you and your planeswalkers have protection from that player until your next turn. I kept it because a 5/5 flier for four is a lot of body for this deck, and I'd understand cutting it.

The expensive cards I left out

Cyclonic Rift ($30.13) is a Game Changer, and so are Fierce Guardianship ($58.34) and Rhystic Study ($60.11). Any one of them lifts the deck back up to a bracket floor of 3, which is the thing the Crop Rotation cut just undid. Mana Drain ($51.31) isn't a Game Changer, but it's a lot of money for {U}{U} in a deck whose blue still isn't fixed. Counterspell ($2.05) has the same {U}{U} problem: even with 22 blue sources the odds of two by turn three are 63.9%, so Mana Leak is the counter on the list.

What the swaps move

Average mana value falls from 3.7 to 3.3, and cards costing five or more fall from 15 to 8. The deck stays at 38 lands, with 18 basics, and 25 instants, because five instants leave and five come in. Petty Theft makes a 26th spell that can be a first instant. Creatures go from 22 to 23 and Wizards from 6 to 7. The bracket floor goes from 3 to 1. The 15 swaps cost $16.47 in all.

FAQ

How do I tap Kalamax without attacking?

Springleaf Drum is the cleanest way. Its cost taps an untapped creature you control, so tap Kalamax for it before you cast an instant and the first ability is live, even on the turn Kalamax arrives. Wort, the Raidmother can also tap it as a conspire cost when you cast a red or green instant. Lightning Greaves lets it attack the turn it enters, and the goad Auras force it to attack every combat.

Does Kalamax copy instants I cast on my opponents' turns?

Yes, as long as it's still tapped. It untaps during your untap step, so if you tapped it on your own turn it stays tapped through every opponent's turn until then. The ability counts the first instant you cast each turn, and each player's turn is a separate turn, so you can get a copy on yours and another on each of theirs. It looks at the whole turn: an instant cast before Kalamax became tapped uses up the first slot.

What does Veyran do with Kalamax?

Veyran, Voice of Duality makes a triggered ability of a permanent you control trigger an additional time when casting or copying an instant or sorcery caused it. Kalamax's first ability triggers on a cast, so the first instant of the turn is copied twice. Each copy triggers Kalamax's counter ability, which Veyran also doubles, so Kalamax gets two counters per copy.

What does upgrading Arcane Maelstrom cost?

$16.47 for all fifteen adds at October 2026 market prices, using the cheapest released printing of each. Steam Vents is $10.05 of that and the other fourteen cards together are $6.42. Steam Vents is reprinted in Star Trek on 13 November 2026, so its price may fall.

Why didn't you add Brainstorm or other cheap cantrips?

Kalamax only copies the first instant of a turn, and a cantrip cast before the one you care about uses that slot. A copied Brainstorm gives you a second Brainstorm and a copied Lightning Bolt gives you a second Bolt, so the cheap instants I added are Lightning Bolt, Abrade and Brazen Borrower's Petty Theft, which do something worth doing twice.

Does the upgrade change the bracket?

It lowers the floor. The box has one Game Changer, Crop Rotation, which sets a floor of Bracket 3. The swaps cut it and add none, so the deck has no Game Changer after them. Adding Cyclonic Rift, Fierce Guardianship or Rhystic Study would put the floor back at 3.
