Endless Punishment precon upgrade guide
Four cards in this box take life from every opponent on their own turn without being asked. Seven more drain people on yours, where Valgavoth can’t see any of it.
Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls draws a card and grows by a +1/+1 counter when an opponent loses life for the first time during that opponent’s own turn. Per opponent, per turn. In a four-player pod a clean round is three cards and three counters, and the trigger doesn’t care how much life was lost, only when.
That timing is the whole problem with this box. Persistent Constrictor takes a life from each opponent at their upkeep. Fate Unraveler, Kederekt Parasite and Spiteful Visions all punish the card they draw in their draw step, and Kederekt only asks for a red permanent, which Valgavoth is. Those four fire on every opponent turn without any help from you.
Against them, seven cards drain people on a turn that is yours: Stormfist Crusader at your upkeep, Braids, Arisen Nightmare at your end step, Star Athlete when it attacks, and the one-shot payouts of Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Fear of Burning Alive, Combustible Gearhulk and Grab the Prize. They’re all reasonable cards. None of them can draw Valgavoth a card, because he only looks at a turn that belongs to somebody else.
The Lord of Pain looks like he belongs on the first list and doesn’t. His damage has to go to a player other than the one who cast the spell, and whoever is taking a turn is usually the one casting. The opponent he hits is nearly always one who isn’t on the clock.
Nine swaps cost $51.91. One of them is a fifth card that fires on every opponent turn by itself, and it costs 88 cents.

100 cards, 38 lands (16 basic), 35 creatures, average mana value 3.59. Mana sources: 31 black, 30 red.

What are the best Endless Punishment upgrades?
Buy from the top and stop wherever the budget does. Each price is for whichever released printing is cheapest today (October 2026), promos included.
- Sulfuric Vortex ($0.88). Two damage to each player at the start of their upkeep, so every opponent loses life before doing anything, every turn. It is the fifth unprompted trigger and the only one that costs nothing but the card slot. It deals the same to you, which gets its own section below.
- Terror of the Peaks ($25.38). A five-mana flier that deals damage equal to a creature’s power whenever another creature enters under your control. Any spell an opponent aims at it costs them 3 life on top, so removal cast on their own turn is life lost on their own turn.
- Blood Crypt ($8.68), Blazemire Verge ($9.59) and Haunted Ridge ($1.24). Three black-red lands that can enter untapped, for the three tapped ones that leave. Verge is always untapped, Crypt is untapped for 2 life, and Ridge is untapped once you control two other lands.
- Painful Quandary ($1.56). Every spell an opponent casts costs them 5 life or a card. They choose, so it never guarantees the trigger, but a player with an empty hand pays in life and a player with a full one pays in cards.
- Zulaport Cutthroat ($1.27) and Pitiless Plunderer ($3.03). One drains each opponent when your creatures die, the other turns the same deaths into Treasure. The deck already has Blasphemous Act, Massacre Girl and Decree of Pain, which kill your own board on purpose.
- Terminate ($0.28). Two mana, instant speed, any creature. The kill happens on their turn, so Blood Artist, Falkenrath Noble and Syr Konrad cash it in during that turn.
The bracket floor is unchanged at 1, because the upgraded list holds no Game Changers. Nine cards come out to make room, and that list is further down.
Sulfuric Vortex is cheap, symmetrical and worth arguing about
A free trigger every opponent turn sounds too good, so here is the bill. Vortex deals 2 damage to each player at their upkeep, you included, and nobody gains life while it is out. That is two life from you every turn it stays on the table. I’d pay it in a deck that wins by draining, because every opponent pays the same rate and Valgavoth draws off each of them every round. But it is a real cost.
It also turns off the gain half of every drain. Blood Artist, Falkenrath Noble, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Bastion of Remembrance, Kardur, Doomscourge and the new Zulaport Cutthroat all still take the life, and none of them give any back. Rampaging Ferocidon already says players can’t gain life, so the box is half-committed to that already.
One interaction pays for the card on its own. Torture Pit adds 2 to any noncombat damage a source you control deals to an opponent, and Vortex is a source you control. Two becomes four at each opponent’s upkeep. Torture Pit is already in the box, as the second half of Spiked Corridor // Torture Pit.
Six spells and three lands make room
Two of the six spells come out because of the opening finding. Enchanter’s Bane fires at the beginning of your end step, and Stormfist Crusader fires at your upkeep, so neither can ever feed Valgavoth. The Crusader also gives each of the three opponents a free card, and costs you the life it costs them.
Basilisk Collar and Mask of Griselbrand are equipment that give one creature lifelink. With Rampaging Ferocidon in the deck and Vortex arriving, lifelink is the keyword to be moving away from. Mask also wants two black mana to cast and three to equip. Séance Board makes mana only for instants, sorceries, Demons and Spirits, and only grows after a creature dies on a turn.
Sadistic Shell Game costs five. Every player, me included, picks one creature I don’t control and all the picks are destroyed, so three of the four picks in a pod belong to opponents. The kill is real. Most of the choosing isn’t mine.
The three lands are the weakest of the box’s tapped ones. Geothermal Bog enters tapped and does nothing else. Bloodfell Caves enters tapped and gains 1 life, a gain Vortex or Ferocidon would cancel. Spinerock Knoll enters tapped, taps for red only, and its hideaway pays out only if an opponent was dealt 7 or more damage that turn.
Five expensive cards and a tapped land I’m leaving alone
Blasphemous Act is a nine-mana sorcery on paper. Each creature on the battlefield takes a mana off the price, down to a floor of one red mana, so on the turn you actually want it, it costs a handful of mana at most. With 35 creatures in the upgraded list, every creature it kills is a trigger for Blood Artist, Falkenrath Noble and Syr Konrad. It kills Valgavoth too, so it’s a card for the turn he isn’t carrying the game.
Spiked Corridor // Torture Pit shows as mana value 8 because its two halves add up in the library. Either half costs four, and Torture Pit is the half that adds 2 to Vortex.
Kaervek the Merciless costs seven, and deals damage equal to the mana value of every spell an opponent casts, to any target. Pointed at the opponent whose turn it is, that is a Valgavoth trigger the moment they cast any spell with a mana value above zero. Persistent Constrictor costs five and has an optional target, so an opponent with an empty board still loses the life. Massacre Wurm costs six and takes 2 life from an opponent each time one of their creatures dies.
Leechridden Swamp enters tapped and is the one tapped land I wouldn’t trade. Once you control two black permanents, it turns a black mana into 1 life lost for each opponent at instant speed, which is a Valgavoth card on demand.
Three tapped lands out, three untapped in, and both colours still short
The land count stays at 38 with 16 basics. Always-tapped lands drop from six to three, and each of the three that remain does something: Canyon Slough cycles, Temple of Malice scries, Leechridden Swamp drains. Untapped lands go from 28 to 29, and conditional ones from four to six.
The calculator still has both colours short on double pips. After the swaps there are 31 black sources and 30 red ones, and 11 spells want two black by turn three against 9 that want two red. At 90% on the play that needs 36 sources, and the deck reaches 83.9% for black and 82.2% for red. Three swapped lands don’t close that gap. They stop it costing tempo as well. Painful Quandary is the only new black double pip, and at five mana it isn’t a turn-three card. Sulfuric Vortex is the only new three-drop that wants two red.
Average mana value moves from 3.49 to 3.59, because the six spells coming in cost 21 mana between them and the six going out cost 15.
Two cards I’d rather be recommending
Sheoldred, the Apocalypse ($81.44) makes every opponent draw cost them 2 life, which is a Valgavoth trigger in every draw step with no mana held up. Adding it would take the swaps to $133.35, over the soft ceiling I work to, so it sits at the top of the next purchase list instead. It isn’t a Game Changer.
Zo-Zu the Punisher ($4.65) deals 2 damage to a land’s controller whenever any land enters. That is another unprompted trigger on every opponent land drop. I left it out because the same 2 comes back at you for every land you play in a 38-land deck, and because it asks for two red mana in the colour that is already short.

FAQ
How many cards can Valgavoth draw in one round of turns?
One per opponent, so three in a four-player pod. The trigger watches each opponent’s own turn separately and fires on the first life that opponent loses, so a second drain on the same turn adds damage but no card. That is why the swaps buy reliability rather than volume. One source that fires on every opponent turn is worth more than three that fire when the board happens to cooperate.
Does Sulfuric Vortex hurt me as much as it hurts the table?
It deals 2 to you at your own upkeep, the same as everyone else, and nobody gains life while it’s out. You are racing the same clock as the pod, with the difference that you draw a card off each opponent every round. In a pod that kills fast it’s the first swap I’d skip. In a pod that gains life, or sits on one big board, it’s the first one I’d make.
Why is Sheoldred, the Apocalypse missing from the list?
Price. The cheapest printing is $81.44, and adding it would take the nine swaps from $51.91 to $133.35. It is the card I’d buy first on a larger budget: every opponent draw costs them 2 life, so every draw step becomes a Valgavoth trigger with no mana held up. It is not on the Game Changers list, so it doesn’t move the bracket.
Does The Lord of Pain trigger Valgavoth?
Almost never. When a player casts their first spell each turn, The Lord of Pain has to target a different player from the one who cast it. On an opponent’s own turn that opponent is the caster, so the damage lands on someone who isn’t taking a turn. On your turn it hits an opponent on a turn that isn’t theirs. It is still a fine card, it just isn’t part of this plan.
What can I do in an upkeep if nothing has drained the opponent yet?
Three cards in the box turn spare mana into one life loss at instant speed. Leechridden Swamp costs one black mana and its own tap, and needs two black permanents, which Valgavoth counts as one of. Shivan Gorge deals 1 damage to each opponent for two generic, one red and its tap. Theater of Horrors does 1 to a target opponent for three generic and one red. Any of them in an opponent’s upkeep gives Valgavoth his card before that opponent has done anything on their turn.
What do the nine upgrades cost?
$51.91 at the cheapest released printing of each card, October 2026. Terror of the Peaks is $25.38 of that, the three lands are $19.51, and the other five cards together are $7.02. Terror’s cheapest printing is a Secret Lair one and Blazemire Verge’s is a promo, so a regular printing of either can cost more.
Is the Endless Punishment precon worth buying before upgrading it?
The 100 cards add up to about $209 at Scryfall market prices in October 2026, so the nine swaps cost about a quarter of what the box already holds. The deck’s own page has the full stock decklist and what the box is worth against its release price.
