Prismari Performance precon upgrade guide

Nineteen of the 29 instants and sorceries in this box cost five or more, and five is where Zaffai starts making 4/4s.

Zaffai scries 1 each time you cast or copy an instant or a sorcery. If that spell's mana value is 5 or more, he also makes a 4/4 Elemental, and at 10 or more he deals 10 damage to an opponent chosen at random. The box is built around that threshold. Of its 29 instants and sorceries, 19 sit at five or more and one, Apex of Power, sits at ten. The cheap end is thin: eight are printed at two or less, and only the two X spells among them can climb past the line.

The second finding is already in the box. Veyran, Voice of Duality makes a triggered ability of yours trigger an additional time when casting or copying an instant or sorcery causes it. Zaffai's magecraft is one, so with Veyran out a five-mana spell makes two 4/4s and scries twice. Nothing in the swaps touches Veyran. They feed him.

Ten swaps, $19.62 in total, at October 2026 market prices for the cheapest released printing (which can be a promo). Seven spells and three lands come in: cheap spells that answer or draw, and three duals that make blue and red.

What are the best Prismari Performance upgrades?

Ten swaps for $19.62. In the order I'd buy them:

  1. Lightning Bolt ($0.74) and Chain Lightning ($0.29). Three damage to any target for {R}. The cheapest single-target damage in the box costs five mana, and both of these cost one. Argued in the answers section.
  2. Mystic Confluence ($0.49). An instant at mana value 5, so it makes a 4/4 on top of countering, bouncing or drawing. It replaces another five-drop, so the count of spells at five or more stays at 19.
  3. Chaos Warp ($0.32) and Counterspell ($2.26). One answers any permanent for three mana and the other answers any spell for two.
  4. Thrill of Possibility ($0.18) and Frantic Search ($0.73). Two cheap draw spells that fill the graveyard the deck's delve and graveyard cards eat.
  5. Sulfur Falls ($0.18), Spirebluff Canal ($4.59) and Steam Vents ($9.84). Three lands that make blue or red, argued in the mana section. Steam Vents is more than half the total and the one to buy last.

A spell at five or more doesn't have to cost five

Zaffai reads the mana value of the spell that set him off, and mana value is printed on the card. It doesn't care what you paid. Delve doesn't change it, so Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time are both mana value 8 however much of the graveyard pays for them. Suspend doesn't either. Inspiring Refrain costs {2}{U} to suspend and is cast for free three upkeeps later, and a spell cast without paying its cost still counts its printed mana value, which is 6. Rousing Refrain does the same at 5 for {1}{R}. Both sit on the curve at their printed cost and take 3 and 2 mana to put in play.

X spells count the X you chose. Epic Experiment costs {X}{U}{R} and Muse Vortex costs {X}{U}{U}, so either reaches mana value 5 at X=3, and the spells they cast from the top of the library for free count too. Blasphemous Act is mana value 9 however many creatures are out. That's why a list of cards costing 7, 8 and 10 isn't the problem it looks like in a deck with this commander.

It also changes what a good cheap spell is. A one-mana spell makes no Elemental, but Storm-Kiln Artist makes a Treasure from it, Talrand, Sky Summoner makes a Drake, Erratic Cyclops grows, and Crackling Drake, Inferno Project, Volcanic Vision and the delve spells all read the graveyard it lands in. Veyran doubles the Treasure, the Drake and the Cyclops's growth. The box has eight spells with a mana value of two or less. The upgraded list has twelve.

Five creatures, a rock and Mana Geyser leave

Octavia, Living Thesis costs {8}{U}{U} and is a creature, so casting it never triggers Zaffai, whatever its mana value. It costs {8} less only with eight instants or sorceries in the graveyard, and Treasure Cruise, Dig Through Time and Living Lore all exile from that same graveyard. By the time it's cheap, Zaffai has already done the work. Living Lore goes with it. It exiles an instant or sorcery as it enters and takes that card's mana value as its size, so with an empty graveyard it dies, and with a full one it takes a card that Volcanic Vision, Surge to Victory or Charmbreaker Devils wanted back. Its payoff, sacrificing it on combat damage to cast that card free, needs a four-mana creature to connect.

Rionya, Fire Dancer needs {3}{R}{R} and a creature worth copying, and the copies are exiled at the end step. Sly Instigator spends {U} and a tap each turn to make an opponent's creature unblockable and goad it, which sends that creature at someone else and does nothing for your spells. Humble Defector draws you two and then hands the creature to an opponent, who can draw two of their own on their turn. In a four-player pod that's a draw engine for the table.

Hedron Archive taps for {C}{C}, and the deck's shortage is colored mana, as the mana section shows. What's left is plenty of ramp: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Izzet Signet, Mind Stone, Talisman of Creativity, Letter of Acceptance and Elementalist's Palette, plus Seething Song. Mana Geyser adds {R} for each tapped land your opponents control, which depends on what they did on their own turn. It's mana value 5 and so is Mystic Confluence, which takes its slot.

Cheap answers for a box whose burn starts at five mana

Most of the box's answers are expensive. Fiery Fall deals 5 damage to a creature for {5}{R}, and it landcycles for {1}{R} if you'd rather have a land. Fiery Encore deals damage equal to a discarded nonland card's mana value, at five mana. Resculpt exiles an artifact or creature for {1}{U} and gives its controller a 4/4 Elemental, which is a fine trade against a creature much bigger than 4/4 and a bad one against a bear. Blasphemous Act and Aetherspouts are the wipe and the combat answer, and the counters, Reinterpret and Traumatic Visions, cost four and five.

Lightning Bolt is an instant that deals 3 damage to any target. Chain Lightning is the same at sorcery speed, and the player or the permanent's controller may pay {R}{R} to copy it. Chaos Warp shuffles any permanent into its owner's library and then reveals the top card, and if that card is a permanent they put it onto the battlefield. It answers an artifact, an enchantment, a planeswalker or a creature of any size for three mana. The cost is that the owner may get a permanent from the top of their library, which is why I'd rather aim it at a big threat than a small one. Counterspell costs {U}{U} and is the only counter in the deck at two mana. Mystic Confluence picks three modes from counter unless they pay {3}, bounce a creature and draw a card, and the same mode can be picked more than once.

Three duals replace two colorless lands and a tapped blue one

Study Hall taps for {C}, and making any other color costs {1} and a tap. Temple of the False God taps for {C}{C} only if you control five or more lands, and it makes neither of the deck's colors. Lonely Sandbar makes {U} but enters tapped, and cycles for {U}. The deck has eight other lands that always enter tapped, and I didn't want a ninth that only makes blue.

In their place go Sulfur Falls (blue or red, untapped if you control an Island or a Mountain, and the deck has 10 Islands and 9 Mountains), Spirebluff Canal (blue or red, untapped on your first three land drops, tapped from the fourth) and Steam Vents (blue or red, untapped for 2 life). Steam Vents is an Island Mountain, so it switches Sulfur Falls on by itself. Always-tapped lands go from nine to eight, and three conditional lands appear where there were none.

It's still short. Ten spells print {R}{R} and getting {R}{R} on turn three to 90% takes 36 red sources. The list has 31 now, up from 30, and the chance is 83.9%, up from 82.2%. Blue is worse: sixteen spells print {U}{U} against 28 sources, 78.5%, up from 76.4%. Counterspell and Mystic Confluence are two of those sixteen. I'd rather say that than call it fixed, and the sources are the next card I'd buy over any spell. Steam Vents is reprinted in Star Trek on 13 November 2026, so its $9.84 may fall.

Apex of Power, Swarm Intelligence and Brass's Bounty stay

Apex of Power is mana value 10, the only card in the box that reaches Zaffai's 10 damage, along with a 4/4. If you cast it from your hand it adds ten mana of one color, so the cost comes back. It exiles the top seven cards of your library and lets you cast spells from among them this turn, and each instant or sorcery cast that way triggers Zaffai too. A copy of it wasn't cast and adds no mana. With Veyran out it sets off two 10-damage triggers.

Swarm Intelligence is a seven-mana enchantment that does nothing on arrival. Each instant or sorcery you cast after that may be copied, and creating a copy of a spell sets off magecraft, so a spell at five or more makes two 4/4s without Veyran. Brass's Bounty makes a Treasure for each land you control. At seven lands that's seven mana back from a seven-mana sorcery that also made a 4/4.

Two blue staples I left at the shop

Cyclonic Rift ($29.83) is the card I'd most like to add and I skipped it on two counts. It's a Game Changer, so adding it makes Bracket 3 the lowest the deck can honestly claim, and its price is more than the ten swaps cost together. Its mana value is 2 whether you cast it for {1}{U} or overload it for {6}{U}, so it makes no Elemental. Mana Drain ($50.88) is not a Game Changer. It does the job Counterspell does for $2.26 and adds colorless mana equal to the countered spell's mana value in your next main phase. If your table leans on counterspells, it's the next card I'd buy.

The deck after the swaps, in numbers

Lands stay at 37, 19 of them basic. Average mana value falls from 4.55 to 4.27. Instants and sorceries rise from 29 to 35 and creatures fall from 21 to 16, both counting Zaffai. Spells at five or more stay at 19 and spells at two or less go from 8 to 12. Legendary creatures go from 8 to 6. Red sources go from 30 to 31 and blue from 27 to 28. The bracket floor stays at 1, and neither list has a Game Changer.

FAQ

Does Veyran really double Zaffai's Elemental tokens?

Yes. Veyran's text makes a triggered ability of yours trigger an additional time if casting or copying a spell of those two types is what set it off, and Zaffai's magecraft is one. With Veyran on the battlefield, a spell with mana value 5 or more makes two 4/4 Elementals and scries 2. Apex of Power would set off two separate 10-damage triggers, each aimed at an opponent chosen at random. The doubling stops the moment Veyran leaves the battlefield, and nothing in the box protects him.

Do suspended and free spells still make Elementals?

They do. Zaffai checks the mana value of the spell that set it off, and a spell cast without paying its mana cost keeps the mana value of its printed cost. Inspiring Refrain (mana value 6) costs {2}{U} to suspend and is cast for free when its last counter comes off, so it makes a 4/4. Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time keep their mana value of 8 however much delve discounts them. Epic Experiment and Muse Vortex count the X you chose, so either one reaches mana value 5 at X=3.

What do the ten swaps cost?

$19.62 in October 2026 market prices at the cheapest released printing, which can be a promo. Steam Vents is $9.84 of that and Spirebluff Canal is $4.59, so the two lands are 74% of the total. The seven spells together come to $5.01. Steam Vents is reprinted in Star Trek on 13 November 2026, so its price may fall.

Is Apex of Power really worth ten mana?

It's the only card in the box that reaches Zaffai's second threshold, and casting it from your hand adds ten mana of one color, so the mana comes back. It also exiles the top seven cards of your library and lets you cast spells from among them this turn, and each instant or sorcery you cast that way triggers Zaffai too. A copy of Apex of Power wasn't cast, so it adds no mana.

Can I add Cyclonic Rift to this deck?

You can, but it's a Game Changer, and one Game Changer puts this list in Bracket 3 at the least. It's also $29.83 at its cheapest printing, which is more than the ten swaps above cost together. Cast for {1}{U} or overloaded for {6}{U}, it has mana value 2 either way, so it never makes an Elemental. Counterspell and Mystic Confluence cover the interaction slot for $2.75 together.

Is the mana fixed after the swaps?

No. Ten spells print {R}{R} and getting {R}{R} by turn three 90% of the time on the play takes 36 red sources, where the list has 31, which is 83.9%. Sixteen spells print {U}{U} against 28 blue sources, 78.5%. Both are up from 82.2% and 76.4% in the box, and the gap comes from how blue and red the spells are, so I didn't cut spells to hide it.
