Witherbloom Witchcraft precon upgrade guide
Willowdusk wants a big pile of life in one turn, and the box's two cards that turn a pile into damage cost five and seven mana.

100 cards, 40 lands (22 basic), 25 creatures, average mana value 3.61. Mana sources: 29 black, 31 green.

What are the best Witherbloom Witchcraft upgrades?
Ranked by how much each swap changes the first five turns. The nine adds total $22.56, each priced at the lowest paper printing on sale in October 2026.
- Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose ($9.02). Whenever you gain life, target opponent loses that much. It's the Sanguine Bond trigger at three mana instead of five, and for {3}{B}{B} every creature you control gains lifelink for a turn.
- Woodland Cemetery ($0.61) and Overgrown Tomb ($8.22). They take the places of two lands that only make colourless mana. Black sources go from 27 to 29 and green from 29 to 31.
- Assassin's Trophy ($0.96) and Putrefy ($0.19). Instant-speed kill spells. The box has two, Mortality Spear and Reckless Spite, and Reckless Spite costs you 5 life.
- Blood Artist ($2.71). Whenever it or any other creature dies, a target player loses 1 life and you gain 1. Every death at the table becomes a life-gain event.
- Maelstrom Pulse ($0.21). Destroys any nonland permanent and every other permanent with the same name, so a token army goes in one card.
- Scavenging Ooze ($0.19). Each creature card it exiles from a graveyard is a counter on the Ooze and 1 life, one separate gain per {G}. Point it at an opponent's graveyard first, since Silversmote Ghoul, Veinwitch Coven and Sproutback Trudge want yours.
- Farseek ($0.45). Two mana for a tapped Swamp, which helps the colour the box is short of.
Two lands, three removal spells, three creatures and Farseek make nine. What they replace is argued under the cuts heading.
Seven lands make no colour, and black is where it shows
The box has 40 lands, and seven of them only tap for colourless mana: High Market, Blighted Woodland, Myriad Landscape, Radiant Fountain, Temple of the False God, Witch's Clinic and Rogue's Passage. Study Hall needs another mana to filter into colour. Meanwhile thirteen spells in the box ask for {B}{B}, counting hybrid mana, and the stock deck has 27 black sources against the 36 that a turn-three {B}{B} wants, which is a 76.4% chance.
Witch's Clinic gives a commander lifelink for {2} and a tap, and Rogue's Passage makes one creature unblockable for {4}. Neither is bad, but both sit where Woodland Cemetery and Overgrown Tomb could. After the swap black has 29 sources and the turn-three {B}{B} chance is 80.4%. Green's {G}{G} check on turn five goes from short by one (89.2%) to met (91.6%). Black is still seven sources short of a clean 90%, and I'm not hiding that. The other five colourless lands do jobs the deck uses, like the 2 life Radiant Fountain gains when it enters.
Always-tapped lands stay at six, and conditional ones go from one to three. Woodland Cemetery enters untapped with a Swamp or Forest, and the deck has 22 basics. Farseek can fetch Overgrown Tomb because it's a Swamp Forest. It arrives tapped either way, so the 2 life is skipped. Overgrown Tomb is also reprinted in the Star Trek set on 13 November 2026, so $8.22 may drop.
One cheap drain card, and it takes 1 life at a time
Four cards in the box punish opponents for your life gain. Dina costs two and drains each opponent for 1 whenever you gain life. Epicure of Blood costs five and does the same. The two that drain the full amount are Sanguine Bond at five and Defiant Bloodlord at seven, and the difference matters because the first pair count events while the second pair count life. Most of what the box gains arrives in small pieces: 1 from Pristine Talisman, 2 from Radiant Fountain, 1 from a Pest token dying. A 1-point event takes 1 from an opponent either way, though Dina and Epicure of Blood take it from every opponent. The full-amount cards only pull ahead when something big lands, like the 6 from Pulse of Murasa or the 7 from Nissa's Renewal.
Vito is the third full-amount drain and the first one under five mana. Beside Sanguine Bond every gain drains twice, and Alhammarret's Archive doubles the amount that both of them see, because they trigger on the life actually gained. It doesn't change Dina or Epicure of Blood, which only count that a gain happened.
Blood Artist adds the other half. The box's gain from deaths is narrow. Sangromancer only counts opponents' creatures, Moldervine Reclamation only yours, and a Pest token gives 1 as it dies. Blood Artist fires on any creature, so Deadly Tempest or Gaze of Granite with it on the table becomes a row of gain events instead of a reset. Deadly Tempest still takes 1 life from you for each creature of yours it destroys.
Willowdusk reads the bigger of two numbers
The ability costs {1} and a tap, works at sorcery speed, and puts +1/+1 counters on another creature equal to the life you gained this turn or the life you lost this turn, whichever is greater. Two things follow. It isn't a sum, so gaining 4 and losing 5 is 5 counters. And Willowdusk can't use it the turn he arrives, because the cost taps him.
The loss side is better stocked than it looks. Reckless Spite costs 5 life, Ancient Craving 3, Feed the Swarm as much as the mana value of what it kills, Ob Nixilis Reignited 1 a turn, and Llanowar Wastes and Talisman of Resilience 1 each time they tap for colour. Overgrown Tomb joins them: pay 2 life to have it enter untapped and that's 2 counters if nothing larger happens.
On the gain side the biggest single events are Pulse of Murasa at three mana (6 life) and Nissa's Renewal at six (7 life and three basics). Either one plus Willowdusk's {1} puts 6 or 7 counters on a creature. The best target is a flier that already gains life, and Vampire Nighthawk has flying, deathtouch and lifelink at three mana. A bigger lifelinker gains more per hit, which is the next gain event.
The two cards I priced out
Sheoldred, the Apocalypse gains you 2 whenever you draw and takes 2 from an opponent whenever they do. The box draws off Ob Nixilis Reignited, Ancient Craving (three draws, three triggers) and Greed. She costs $82.19 at the cheapest released printing, 3.6 times all nine adds together. She isn't a Game Changer, and she's the first card to buy after these nine.
Ayara, First of Locthwain ($3.88) drains 1 and gains 1 whenever a black creature enters. She costs {B}{B}{B}, and even with 29 black sources the deck has only an 80.4% chance of {B}{B} by turn three, so she stays out.
Nine cuts, and the expensive cards that stay
Taste of Death makes each player sacrifice three creatures, and the deck has 24 creatures built to be the engine, so you lose three too for six mana. The three Food tokens are 3 life each at {2} apiece, which doesn't pay for three creatures. Revival Experiment is also six mana, returns at most one card per permanent type, costs 3 life per card and exiles itself. Life lost does feed Willowdusk, which is why it's a close call, but Pulse of Murasa, Healing Technique and Veinwitch Coven already get cards back from the graveyard for less, to your hand rather than the battlefield.
Ezzaroot Channeler is the closest call. It taps for 2 life and discounts creature spells by the life you gained, but it costs six and Vito does more at three. Venser's Journal costs five to gain 1 life per card in hand each upkeep, and Sun Droplet gains 1 life per upkeep only after you've taken damage. Loxodon Warhammer costs three plus three to equip one creature with lifelink, where Vito's activation gives the whole team lifelink for five. Yedora, Grave Gardener returns a dying creature as a face-down Forest, which turns an engine creature into a land. Witch's Clinic and Rogue's Passage, the last two cuts, are argued under the lands.
Four cards a quick pass would cut stay on purpose. Verdant Sun's Avatar costs seven, but it gains life equal to the toughness of every creature that enters, itself included, in a deck with 25 creatures. Sproutback Trudge costs nine on paper and {X} less for the life you gained that turn, and it casts itself back from the graveyard at end step after a gain. Nissa's Renewal stays because of the 7 life above. Gyome, Master Chef protects one creature at a time, but its Food tokens are 3 life each and it makes them from creatures entering.

FAQ
Does life I lose count for Willowdusk, Essence Seer?
Yes. He puts counters equal to the greater of the life you gained and the life you lost this turn, not the total. Reckless Spite is the largest fixed loss at 5 life, then Ancient Craving at 3, and Overgrown Tomb adds 2 if you pay for it to enter untapped.
How much does it cost to upgrade Witherbloom Witchcraft?
$22.56 for the nine adds, at the cheapest released printing as of October 2026. Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose ($9.02) and Overgrown Tomb ($8.22) are $17.24 of that, and the other seven come to $5.32. Overgrown Tomb is reprinted in a Star Trek set on 13 November 2026, so it may be cheaper by then.
Do Vito and Sanguine Bond both drain on the same life gain?
Yes. Each triggers separately, so a 3-life gain with both out drains 3 twice. Defiant Bloodlord adds a third copy of the trigger, and Alhammarret's Archive doubles the amount all of them see. Dina, Soul Steeper and Epicure of Blood only drain 1 per gain, so the Archive doesn't change them.
Can Farseek find Overgrown Tomb?
Yes. Farseek searches for a Plains, Island, Swamp or Mountain card, and Overgrown Tomb is a Swamp Forest. It enters tapped, so you skip the 2 life, and it counts toward the Swamp check for Tainted Wood.
What does Assassin's Trophy give the other player?
A basic land from their library, put onto the battlefield untapped. That is a real cost on turn four and a small one on turn ten, so I aim it at permanents worth more than a land drop. Putrefy has no drawback but only hits artifacts and creatures.
Is 40 lands too many for this deck?
Forty lands is high against a typical 35 to 38, and the nine swaps leave it at 40. The count stayed because the lands I swapped for sources were colourless, not surplus. If the deck floods, Temple of the False God is the first to go, since it makes {C}{C} only with five lands in play.
