Animated Army precon upgrade guide
Nineteen cards in this box become 4/4 attackers on your own turn. Exactly one card in it gives them trample.
Bello, Bard of the Brambles reads like a build-around and behaves like one. During your turn, every non-Equipment artifact and non-Aura enchantment you control with mana value 4 or greater is a 4/4 Elemental with indestructible, haste, and a card attached to combat damage. Bloomburrow's Gruul deck ships 19 permanents that qualify, which is a lot for a preconstructed deck, and then leaves most of the follow-through unbuilt. My 13 swaps cost about $80, and almost all of them are about the follow-through rather than the payoff.

100 cards, 38 lands (18 basic), 16 creatures, average mana value 3.64. Mana sources: 34 red, 36 green.
No Game Changers and no mass land denial, so it sets no bracket floor. How brackets work →
Everything here follows from two phrases on the commander
The first is during your turn. Your Thran Dynamo is a 4/4 while you are attacking and a mana rock the rest of the time. It cannot block. It is also not a creature when someone points a removal spell at creatures on their own turn, and it is not on the board for a sweeper cast outside your turn.
That asymmetry is why the two sweepers in the box are better than they look. Starstorm is an instant, so casting it on an opponent's turn deals X damage to every real creature in play and touches none of your artifacts or enchantments. Blasphemous Act counts every creature on the battlefield when you work out what it costs, and Bello has just made several of yours into creatures, so it lands for four or five mana often enough to matter. The animated permanents are indestructible when it resolves. Bello is a 3/3 and is not, which is the bill.
The second phrase is deals combat damage to a player. Attacking is not enough. A 4/4 with no evasion, swung into three opponents holding blockers, is a 4/4 that gets chumped, and the whole draw engine goes quiet. The box's answer to that is Garruk's Uprising and nothing else. Two of my adds do nothing but fix it, and I think they are the two that matter most.
The five upgrades that move this deck the most
- Primal Rage gives the whole team trample for two mana. Nineteen 4/4s that cannot be chumped is a different deck from nineteen that can, and this is the cheapest card on the list.
- Nevinyrral's Disk is the sweeper the box does not have, and during your turn it is an indestructible 4/4 that survives pressing its own button.
- Guardian Project draws a card every time one of those permanents enters, because during your turn it enters as a creature.
- Heroic Intervention is the answer to this deck's one real fragility, which I get to below.
- Kessig Wolf Run gives trample on demand out of a land slot, and it costs 38 cents.
The full list of what leaves is below, with the reasoning card by card.
Thirteen cards leave, and only four are ones Bello animates
Nine of the cuts have no relationship to the commander at all. Rampaging Baloths, Kodama of the East Tree, Etali, Primal Storm, Tendershoot Dryad, Grothama, All-Devouring and Pyreswipe Hawk are five- and six-mana creatures the deck is not built to support, and Grothama hands every opponent cards on the way. Pyreswipe Hawk also wants double red, which the mana base is already stretched to find.
The other four are permanents Bello does animate, cut on price rather than on principle. Rolling Hamsphere and Spine of Ish Sah cost seven mana to become the same 4/4 that Thran Dynamo becomes for four. Sunbird's Invocation gives you a free spell cheaper than the one you just cast, and after these swaps this deck's average cast is 3.64. Rain of Riches is the most expensive card in the box at about $12, and it cascades only off the first spell each turn that treasure mana paid for.
Which raises the obvious objection: why keep the rest of the expensive enchantments? Because the instinct that says cut a six-mana enchantment is right in most decks and wrong in this one. Warstorm Surge stays because an animated permanent that enters during your turn enters as a creature, and Warstorm Surge deals four damage to any target when it does. Garruk's Packleader and Path of Discovery read that same event and pay off the same way. Gilded Lotus, Thran Dynamo, Hedron Archive, Bootleggers' Stash and Alchemist's Talent are why 17 ramp pieces is not the bloat the count suggests: five of them attack for four.
Two more stay on arithmetic. Mosswort Bridge needs ten total power to release the card it hid, and Bello plus two animated permanents is eleven. Ghalta, Primal Hunger costs {10}{G}{G} minus your total power, and eleven power pays the whole generic half. The same board state switches both cards on, which is a pleasant accident nobody was obliged to arrange.
Four jobs the box left unfinished
Connect. Primal Rage and Kessig Wolf Run. Trample turns the draw trigger from a hope into a plan, and the land doubles as a mana sink on turns when you have nothing to cast.
Interact. The box has four pieces of targeted removal, which is thin. Nevinyrral's Disk is the headline: it enters tapped, so the button comes online a turn later, but during your turn it is indestructible and so is everything else Bello has animated, which makes a symmetrical wipe read very differently on the two sides of the table. Skysovereign, Consul Flagship deals three damage when it enters and three more whenever it attacks, and because Bello hands it haste and a body, both halves happen the turn you cast it and you never crew it. Hull Breach costs two mana and answers an artifact, an enchantment, or both. Song of the Dryads answers anything at all. Shatterskull Smashing is removal when you need removal and a land when you need a land, which is the right shape for a deck running 38 of them.
Draw. Guardian Project and Elemental Bond both trigger on the animated permanents entering, joining the two the box already had. Mind's Eye costs five, so it is also a 4/4, and it turns every opponent's draw step into a small decision for them.
Keep Bello alive. Heroic Intervention protects the board and, more to the point, the commander who is making the board. Bear Umbra is the odd one out: it is an Aura, so Bello ignores it completely, which is the non-Aura clause working exactly as printed. It goes in anyway, because umbra armor is the cleanest insurance available in these colours and untapping your lands when Bello attacks pays for whatever comes next.
One card I left off. Aggravated Assault gives you extra combat phases, and extra combats with a board of hasty 4/4s that draw on damage is close to the best thing this deck could be doing. It also costs about $36, which is nearly half again what the other twelve cost together, and that is out of proportion for an $80 precon. If you already own a copy, play it over Mind's Eye. If you do not, buy the other twelve first and decide afterwards.
Nine of the box's lands enter tapped and three of them pay nothing for it
Nine unconditional taplands out of 38 is heavy for a deck that wants Bello down on turn three and attacking on turn four. Most of them earn it, though. Sheltered Thicket, Forgotten Cave and Tranquil Thicket cycle once you have lands enough. Gruul Turf makes two mana. Raging Ravine becomes a creature. Mosswort Bridge, as above, is live here specifically.
The three with no excuse are Temple of Abandon, Wooded Ridgeline and Path of Ancestry. That last one is the interesting cut. Path of Ancestry pays a scry, but only on mana you spend for a creature that shares a type with Bello. He is a Raccoon Bard. The box holds four other Raccoons or Bards. Four cards out of a hundred does not buy a land the right to always enter tapped. Kessig Wolf Run and Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance replace two of the three, and Shatterskull Smashing covers the third from the spell half of the list. Unconditional taplands fall from nine to six; untapped lands go from 25 to 27.
One number I am deliberately not chasing. The mana math wants two more red sources to reach 90% on a double-red three-drop and settles for 88%. The three cards asking are Berserkers' Onslaught and Gratuitous Violence, both five-drops you were never casting on turn three, and Starstorm, an X spell. That is a rounding error, not a mana base problem.
Nineteen targets before, nineteen after, about two mana cheaper
The count of permanents Bello animates does not move at all: 19 in the box, 19 after the swaps. What moves is what they cost. The four leaving average 6.25 mana and the four arriving average 4.5. Average mana value across the whole deck falls from 4.03 to 3.64, and six-drops go from seven cards to three.
The creature count drops from 22 to 16, which reads worse than it plays. On your own turn this deck has 16 creatures plus 19 permanents that are also creatures. Card draw goes from 9 sources to 12. The bracket floor does not move: no Game Changers in the box, none added, so this stays a deck you can put down at a table that asked for something casual.

FAQ
Do my mana rocks really attack?
Yes, as long as they cost four or more. In the upgraded list that is Gilded Lotus, Thran Dynamo, Hedron Archive, Bootleggers' Stash and Alchemist's Talent. During your turn each one is a 4/4 with haste and indestructible, and each still taps for mana, because Bello adds the creature type without taking anything away. Attacking with a rock does tap it, so decide before you declare whether you needed that mana this turn.
What bracket does Animated Army sit in after these swaps?
The same one it shipped in. The box contains no cards from the Game Changers list and none of my 13 adds are on it either, so the floor this list can honestly claim does not move. Nothing here turns it into a combo deck; it gets faster and more consistent, which is a different axis. Paste the finished list into the bracket checker if you make further changes.
Should I add a big artifact creature like Wurmcoil Engine?
Be careful with that instinct. Bello sets the power and toughness to 4/4, so a 6/6 artifact creature gets smaller on your own turn, not bigger. It does gain indestructible, haste and the draw trigger, so it is a trade rather than a disaster, but do not spend money on large artifact creatures expecting the commander to grow them. Artifacts and enchantments with no body of their own are where the effect is pure profit.
What do these upgrades cost?
About $80 for all 13 at market prices in September 2026, against a box that is worth roughly the same in singles. Heroic Intervention and Guardian Project are the two biggest line items and are also the two I would buy first after Primal Rage, which is under $6 and does the most work per dollar of anything here.
What happens when someone kills Bello?
The board stops being a board. Every animated permanent goes back to being an artifact or an enchantment, and if it happens mid-combat those attackers are removed from combat entirely, because a permanent that stops being a creature stops being an attacking creature. That is the deck's one genuine fragility and there is no redundancy for it in these colours, which is why Heroic Intervention and Bear Umbra are on the list and why I would hold the Intervention rather than use it to push damage.
Which of the box's expensive enchantments are worth keeping?
Most of them. Warstorm Surge, Primeval Bounty, Gratuitous Violence, Berserkers' Onslaught, Unnatural Growth, Greater Good and Path of Discovery all stay, because each one is both an effect you want and a 4/4 body on the turn you cast it. The two I cut, Sunbird's Invocation and Rain of Riches, are the two whose text is weakest once you stop counting the body.
